These extenders are great in concept, but come with some pay-offs, which you need to be prepared to work around - consider the issues of "loss of light" and focussing when using these extenders.

And yes, these extenders are designed to be used with Canon "L" (white "pro") lenses.

Your cheapest long zoom option will be one of the Sigma's 500mm zooms - see http://www.orms.co.za/product.php?a=view&product=1548 - got R12k lying around? ;)

Hi everyone.

So I've just gotten my hands on a Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS USM lens and considering getting a Canon 2x II TC. I haven't had a chance to test it out yet but how much of the IQ will suffer from this TC. I've seen photos from Bwana's 300mm f2.8 + 2x TC and they look real good. Could I expect to get quality similar to that? I'm still shooting with a 400D which I know isn't the greatest, but hopefully it should be fine?

The 2x is pretty unforgiving so I'd rent one for a day and see how it works with the lens. Have you got the 1.4x?

Getting time to upgrade that body soon. :)

I just haven't had enough finances to upgrade the body yet but I'm still working on that. I found a second hand 2x TC at a really good price so that's why I'm after it in a hurry. I have been meaning to rent one but I just haven't had a chance to look and see if the rental shop has them. I haven't considered the 1.4x because I have a 300mm already and I would like that extra reach.

Could i try out your 2x TC out please Bwana?

If you're going to the rugby tonight I could probably hand it over for a little bit but I'm covering the cricket in east london tomorrow so I'd need it back.

Just don't be mocking my socks! :p

Oh wow that was easier than I thought hahaha. I won't be going to the rugby this evening so I guess I'll arrange with you another time. But thanks

LOL so that was you then ;) At least you got your 2 seconds of fame. You're more than welcome to mock my lack of photography skills ;)

I have to go up to EL again next weekend for the cricket so I won't be able to make the Kings vs Cheetahs match otherwise I'd lend it to you then.

chau - did you ever get ever buy / test the 2x on the 70-200?

I'm also wondering about the quality reduction on it - is it like pixel peepin stuff or actually 'wtf is wrong with this photo?' I've read the initial 2x wasn't great - but the II is quite decent?

Can you almost use the lens as a macro with the TC? I read somewhere that minimum doesn't change - and I'm thinking 400mm at 1.5m is quite close in?

I've got the mkII but the mkIII is supposed to be even better. For one thing it's got improved electronics which let it play nicer with the new (excluding the 70-200 f/2.8 II) lenses.

Why excluding that lens?

EDIT : And the macro side? If the mi focus distance doesn't change and one can really do 400mm at 1.5m - is it decent for macro?

Probably because the lens predates the TC? It still works - it's just the electronics aren't optimised for it.

It doesn't appear that the minimum focusing distance changes with a TC.

Remember that the focusing speed decreases a bit when you add the TC. TBH it's not going to be the ideal macro solution - even if you get enough magnification for it to be classified as macro. You're probably better off reversing a 50mm if you have one.

Thanks bwana.

I asked on the ODP forum and they kind of said the same thing. My initial thinking was if I can do this (200mm) from 1.2 meters then I can double that biscuit to fit the frame ... as min focus distance won't be efected and will still be at 1.2 meters

So while not ideal, for someone on a budget I'm guess it'll be the best value - as you get the 400mm telephoto for animals in games parks and a fairly decent close up for bugs etc. Best of all, there are plenty of these things for sales at around R2,000.00

Tubes may better and the same price - but I don't have the telphoto.
A macro lens (I'm guessing?) is the best - but 3 to 4 times the price and won't do telephoto.

I'm poor ;) ... so seems it may work OK
