So a month or two back I bought myself a new Canon G3 X. It has a 1" sensor (so better than your average camera but not quite a DSLR) and a 25x zoom fixed lens (equivalent of 600m lens at max zoom).
If you wanted to know what it is capable of I took these two images of the same place last night with the tripod. The images are heavily resized which caused severe quality loss.

Max telephoto (8 sec, ISO 125 to get the car light trails)
In short - I'm loving it. An excellent all purpose/travel camera.
