Stylish, compact and easy to use, the Canon HV30 packs a punch.

Canon keeps on churning out amazing product after amazing product. The HV30 is Canon’s latest HD camcorder using MiniDV cassettes as the storage media. It’s an improvement over the HV20, which was named ‘Camcorder of the Year’ in 2007. And improvements it has. Let’s take a quick glance at the technology driving the HV30. The HV30 sports a high-definition 10x optical zoom lens, which uses twin aspherical lens elements to combat chromatic irregularities. A special lens coating reduces ghosting and flare.

Canon’s DIGIC DV II processor uses advanced noise-reduction technology to deliver sharp, crisp HD video. The DV30 features a built-in flash, PictBridge connection and a one-push histogram display that monitors brightness levels. It allows budding filmmakers and hobbyists to capture 2.07-megapixel photographs while shooting video, or 3.1-megapixel stills in dedicated Photo mode.

The Canon Full HD CMOS video sensor captures HD footage at a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels - the same resolution as the latest full-HD TVs. The sensor incorporates on-chip noise-reduction circuitry and a Bayer Placement RGB Primary Color Filter for accurate and vivid colour reproduction. And the HV30 is easy to use, which in our books counts for a lot. Selecting key controls during shooting is easy. A joystick controller enables simple, one-handed access to common functions such as microphone level and exposure compensation, as well as advanced image options.

The camcorder’s dedicated focus mode selector and manual control dial really impressed us, as the user has full control over focus. For playback, HDMI and component output ports allow you to connect the camcorder directly to an HDTV. DV in and out (FireWire) allow transfer of footage to a computer for editing. And for the serious filmmaker, microphones, video lights and other peripherals can be attached to the HV30 using the Advanced Accessory shoe.

Even though most new camcorders don’t use MiniDV cassettes as the storage media, but rather record to an on-board hard drive or flash drive, MiniDV is still a popular storage format and is becoming cheaper. In fact, we were able to buy a pack of three MiniDV cassettes for R59 while reviewing the HV30 and recorded some amazing footage. Moreover, when you capture video on a MiniDV cassette, the video is in RAW format, so no compression takes place, which makes for even better quality. So, if you’re looking for a superb HD camcorder using MiniDV cassettes, this is about as good as it gets.
