The camera is for a run of the mill home user. Not looking to do anything fancy but snap good quality shots. I know I am not giving much to go on. But let's use this as a starting base.

EDIt: Please compare against the Sony DSC-T70 if you can.

Canon , Sony, Panasonic. You can't go wrong with any of those.

Just don't buy these R599 to R999 specials :>>

Rather go for one thats around R1700 to R2000 (they all have better lenses, sensors, more functions and much better image quality than the special one's)

Just remember you get what you pay for in the end.

Then you should be oraait.

Just got the MiL the Ixus 80 - nice camera for her needs.

 I got a Canon Powershot 560 for the missus for r999 - nothing wrong with it at all.

bwana - the IXUS 75 is driven by the fact that it can be got for around R2500. Should have mentioned that initially.

Ah, Ok - she got hers for r2800 so it wouldn't have been that far out of budget.

bwana - do you trust the site you linked to earlier wrt reviews?

DPReview.com? They're fairly well regarded by most when it comes to reviews. Why?

Oh I am a novice in this space. I have however noticed that you seem to know your stuff wrt cameras (digital or not). Just wanted to have that final confirmation about the site.

Thing is I will be making largely a 3rd party recommendation. Just want to make sure that the sources i cite i have comfort with.

Arguably the best on the net. Most certainly one you have to look at when comparing cameras.

I got my Ixus 75 off bidorbuy a few years back - its been great, recently though it picked up a funny bug - if you rotate the camera for a portrait type shot - the screen goes off - go figure.

P.S. Only paid R900 (I think) for it.

Are we talking about the same camera? The IXUS 75 was only announced in Feb 07.

Odd bug with the screen though.

You are correct - Ixus 55, just checked the auction - paid R 1,105.00 in October 2006.

I think the bug has something to do with that little detector thingy that rotates the picture to fill the LCD.
