Canon does not offer international warranties, to my knowledge. The 1 year international warranty probably means you can send it back to the seller and they will repair it or have it repaired, which doesn't even mean that they'll send it back to Canon specifically.
I did a bit of research and it looks like Canon do honour the warranty of a product bought in another country (with an international warranty card). However I didn't manage to find anything specific to SA.
I also had a look in the box of my speedlite that I bought recently and that also came with an international warranty card.
I think giving Canon SA a call would be my best bet.
From that page I read that the Canon warranty is for the USA. I'd be willing to bet the "international warranty card" is the shops warranty and requires you to ship the item back to them if anything was wrong with it.
To that end, I'd rather spend the extra $140 odd and get it from a well known and respected shop.
