I bought a Canon 5D Mkiv + a EF24-105mm F4L ii lens off FB marketplace as I wanted to rekindle my love for photography, but not break the bank with the new mirrorless cameras. Everything worked fine for about a week and then the lens brought up the dreaded ERR01 error code. I took the lens to Ludwigs Photographic in Pretoria who said they couldn't fix it as they couldn't get the parts needed. They said the flex cable and image stabilizer assembly needed to be replaced. As I stay in Centurion, I took it to Canon to quote for a repair and almost had a heart attack with the 25K quote.
Physically the lens is in quite a good condition and I would prefer to have it repaired rather than playing the lottery again on buying another 2nd hand lens. The focal range is just what I had in mind as a walk around lens. Can anyone recommend a reputable repairer in my area. There are many dodgy people out there.
Outdoorphoto replied they do not do repairs. Orms said they do their Canon repairs through Canon.

Ouch, check with BWANA where he services his lenses, I am sure it will be cheaper

Sorry, I’m not going to be of much assistance - my repair guy buggered off to Europe last year, the last job he did for me was to fix the broken ribbon cable on my 24-105 mk 1. I really thought they’d fixed that issue with the mk2. What about ordering the parts overseas and getting them to fix it here?

I found the parts on AliExpress but a bit hesitant to buy. If you choose the free delivery, you at the mercy of the post office. The other option is DHL which is quite expensive.

If you know what's wrong with it (canon should tell you) then I would buy the spares needed and the tools to open the lens and do it properly.

But to be quoted R25k on a R30k lens is a joke fml, it's either dustbin or try it yourself. You don't want to watch the full videos... it's complicated unless you're comfortable working with these.

I ordered some parts earlier this year from AliExpress to repair a Fujifilm lens and it was sent via the Post Office and arrived in 3 weeks, the part fitted great and the lens now works perfectly.

It’s ridiculous that the ribbon issue with that lens is still on going, it’s been a known issue on the MK1 for probably well over 15yrs, I had a failure on that lens when I used to shoot Canon. If the lens was working perfectly before the error code I wonder why Canon wanted to also replace the IS module because they shouldn't be failing at the same time or is that also a weakness in that lens?
