What do you guys think about the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM ? Looks good but for the price I can actually get the 70-300 f4-5.6 IS USM.
I haven't used it, but I know quite a few folks on ODP were not too impressed with it. You may also want to look at a Tamron 17-50 f2.8. It doesn't have IS, but folks who use it rate it very highly.

But it's for 35mm. I hear it's not designed for sensors.
Besides, why would you want that range for a crop factor camera?
If you have a crop factor cam, this lens is pretty pointless IMO.
You will already have 18-55 with your kit lens.
Then, if you want a tele, there is the 55-250 IS.

Nonetheless - does the 40D come with the 18-55 now? While I was looking on their site I noticed that BH offers that 28-135 as a kit lens with that camera.
I see what you mean about the distortion - its not displeasing in that photo though.
