Has anybody tried making one of these? I think the R300 is a bit too expensive for something so simple. I'm in the process of making one for myself. I just need to find a button that is similar to the shutter release so I can focus and take the picture with one button instead of focussing with one and taking the photo with the another

ok sorry. a wired one. I want to make one for my 400D

Oh yes - R300 is definitely a rip-off.

I've made one. It's one button that you press but I used 2 micro "limiter" switches (I think that is what they are called) that I had laying around. They have those metal tabs that act as a lever that presses down on the button. I've put one level underneath the other - but I have to say it did take some fine tuning to get right. Total build cost me about R30.

Will post a pic.

Edit: Here is the pic of the finished remote.

Ah ok I know which switch you're talking about. I can see that can be a hassle to fine tune. Getting the distance between them is quite tricky. What kind of button did you use? I'm looking for one just like the shutter release button so I only need to use one switch. But if I can't find one of those ill try your method because it looks really neat. I take that switch at the bottom is to lock the shutter open?

I got an infrared one for about R50:

and they have another:

Problem is they aren't taking new orders. The stuff comes from Hong Kong and the SAPO steals half of it. Seriously

Half!

Bastards!

But I got the top one and it works beautifully. I see it's up to R63 now...

wow, a wireless remote for so little! My parents are going overseas to Asia at the end of the year so I'll ask them to look out for all these funny goodies for me :)

I got the canon wired remote a while back - and its great for long exposure shots because you can lock the button closed - but for general remote shooting I'll stick with my current netbook/iphone setup.

Yes it is. The only drawback of the switches I used is that they don't really have much tactile feedback. I'll see if I can find a part number of the dual press button they use in cameras as soon as I have some time.
