Canon unveils its first full-frame mirrorless camera

Canon Inc. is finally entering the full-frame mirrorless camera market, joining Sony Corp. and Nikon Corp. in a new battleground for professional-grade camera equipment.

The Japanese electronics giant will begin selling in late October the EOS R for 237,500 yen ($2,130), a price tag targeted at professionals and enthusiasts. It aims to move 20,000 units a month.

This looks pretty good to me. Only full frame mirrorless with the fully articulated screen that I love in my current camera. And Canon seems to have the best local support of the camera manufacturers. They're not 100% there, but they don't treat South Africa like an afterthought as most of the other manufacturers seem to.

The 4K is cropped which is a major fail. It should retail for just under 30K locally if exchange rates stay more or less the same.

Specs wise this isn't a very impressive camera. I aspect all the mirrorless cameras that will slot below this to be crop censors

Nikon and Canon have shot themselves in the foot with these offerings. A lot of people currently on their systems wanted badly to go over to their mirrorless systems but these sub-par offerings will just make them jump ship.

Not really convinced. Will wait for some reviews but I think the price tag is gonna kill any edge it may have. Also looks too much SLR like and not the sleek designs I'm used to with mirrorless.

I'm very curious to see the pricing. The US pricing makes the Sony offering look better, but in my experience Canon's pricing tends to be much closer to US pricing here then the other camera makers. Certainly not a straight currency conversion, but much less extra. And more frequent specials. So this might end up beating the Sonys on price.

As a professional photographer or videographer? As a photographer full lens compatibility is important, most videographers don’t need to concern themselves with that.

Insignificant on a global scale. It will be the U.S. pricing that makes or breaks it.
