yesterday my adsl line was activated so i plug in my speedtouch 330 usb modem and try and connect. The modem syncs and according to the telkom engineer who tested it twice the guys in capetown can see my modem. Therfore i figure it is most probably the modem.

it connects then tries to authenticate but get stuck on the username and password. i have checked they are correct.

then error 721 - the remote computer did not respond.

Any help please?

P.S.
This modem is the standard modem supplied by most UK broadband ISP's. This one by Virgin Broadband. Has anybody else had the same problem when bringing a modem back from the UK and trying to use it on a telkom line?

To make it easier for us...

Copy and paste all your settings in the unit (if it is the kind with a web interface) and paste them here (other than user and pw). Or copy and paste your other settings here if it is a standard USB type modem. That may give some clues.

Have you got all the right software - the virgin stuff is all localised for UK. For one thing the UK uses pppoa rather than pppoe like we do.

OK - its a usb modem so not very configurable

VPI: 0
VCI: 38
type: PPPoA
Encasulation: VCMUX

Modem Type: POTS
Mode: Gdmt.A

Hope that helps.

OK none of that worked - anyway billion modem should be on the way - ordered yesterday - 1 more weekend of Virgin EDGE:mad:
