Hey all...

i know i might be the unmfteenth person to ask this, but u have racked the forums and still cant come to clean conclusion of which way to go..

I am getting my ADSL from Telkom in a few days(hopefully :)) but still stuck
on the choice of modem/router i want to get. One of the things i couldnt really
get is what is the difference between ADSL2 and ADSL2+, which obviously will determine which one i choose.

What im looking for in basic is a ADSL modem/wireless router. I got the SMC Wireless N USB stick as a gift so thinkin i should try gettin at least a wireless N router to maximise the throughput (and be ready when it becomes standard anyway). I guess the LAN ports arent THAT important but they could be handy if all else fails. Ive read that the Netgear DGN2000 is mostly fitting my requirements, but then i dont know if it would be optimally compatible with my SMC receiver.

Anyone out there that can mayb shed some light on the choice for me?
Here is my Wireless USB : http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?event=viewProduct&localeCode=EN_USA&cid=5&scid=117&pid=1645
and the modem im concidering : http://www.netgear.com/Products/RoutersandGateways/WirelessNRoutersandGateways/DGN2000.aspx

Thx alot all, appreciate the help alot!

If I had to buy a new modem right now, it would be this one:

Price is unbeatable, and the firmware is pretty much the same as the Telkom Mega series routers (also made by Aztech). It uses the TI-AR7 chipset which will give great stability, especially on longer distances from the exchange, as well as lower latency than other dsl modems.

But if you're happier spending more for a full-house modem-router then yeah i dont think you could go wrong with the Netgear DGN2000 or any other netgear dsl modem/router for that matter...

/vote netgear or linksys

in RSA we are not yet at adsl2+ (should be 20mbs afaik), but i guess its better to get one that is adsl2+ which most are anyways.

I agree - had one before lightning killed it! I put in my username and password & away we went! have to get another one soon!

dont get that dobroadband router. Its network locked, tried setting up a different isp on the thing and it just refuses to open up any pages

i go the mega 105mw and i use it wilth the is and saix network.

Used axxess , web Africa , telkom , is accounts on it never had a problem.

yes....unfortunately. But its not all that bad as im making it out to be

No doubt, i have read many a review telling the Billion to be a reliable and not at all bad modem, and in some cases Telkom blesses u with not that many hassles. Im was worried about getting the Netgear modem together with my SMC stick, but thinking about it its mayb better getting a quality modem that u can always UTP link into than trying to get something that will optimally perform with my receiver thats about half its worth and always easily replaceable...

I use the Netgear DGN2000!

It looks good and does it's job wonderfully.

It does get a bit hot though! If you go for the DGN2000 ask the supplier to get you legs for it so you can have it vertically, it runs much cooler if it stands vertically.

Thanx alot for the reply! Upon my endless surfing for the cheapest vendor i have come across the numerous posts talking about the heat issue and how it seems to be a big problem. This started to break my stride a bit and seein as how the norm for this unit is about R1.2k+ mayb i shouldnt take that chance. Anyone know of a unit does that basically the same as the DGN2000 but without all the fancy extras like VPN and all that, but still wireless N tho? If something like that doesnt exist i guess ill have to just suck it up and go and buy it already! :p

Get a D-Link router I have the DSL-2540U can't go wrong. The Netgears get very hot unless you do like me and make it holy :P and add a fan

I have a SMC 7904WBRA2 ADSL2 Wireless Modem/Router with 4 Ethernet ports. Works like a charm, setting up and adding username and password was a breeze. Cost me R750.00. BTW got ADSL line within 4 days from placing order with Telkom..

The Billion 800VGT does not support the wireless N draft it only supports the "a + b +g" modes. I suggest that you get the Billion 7300N or 7402NX these routers do support the wireless N draft. You will never go wrong with Billion.
