hi,

I have an Open adsl router. all of the sudden yesterday, it said limited or no connectivity and i have not been able to get my connection back since. My other computers on the network go fine(I'm on one now). but when i check the ip config on that computer, its getting a 169.x.x.x ip address and even the wrong subnet thing. i have tried rebooting the computer and modem, also left them both off for hours, repairing the connection, disabling and re-enabling it. No luck, i tried with zone alarm and AVG both turned off and still couldnt get a correct ip.
I used this computer to get numbers like the default gateway, valid ip address and subnet. I manually put these into my LAN connection instead of just letting dhcp automatically get them. The connection was now connected but i still couldnt access the internet. However, I was able to get other network resources, like the shared files on the other computers. the only thing that wouldn't go through was the internet. So now I am stumped as to where i should go with this. Is it some easy software fix or what?

OS: Xp home SP 2
AV: AVG
F/W: Zone alarm pro

Thanks in advance

Evan

Open adsl router? does that meen its in bridging mode? or does the router hold the account information and makes the connection for you?
If its the latter then you sure your DNS servers are set correctly and working?
If its the first option then you obviously need to dial your DSL account first.
Some routers, noteably Billions, when in bridge mode automatically disable the DHCP, if your pc is set to automatically obtain and IP address it will get a windows default of 169.*.*.* which will still work for Bridge as the protocol used for the connection will automatically go through the bridged router...

open is just the brand as in OPEN824RLW VoIP/ADSL2+ Wireless Router (Lifeline). and the router holds the info that makes it connect. So i don't think its in any kind of bridge mode, but yea im sure the dns servers and everything are right. i can use them all on this computer

So the router has made the connection and obtained an IP address?
if thats the case and you are sure you are not capped, its more than likely DNS servers...
does the router have an option to ping externally to test if you can communicate with a website. Test pinging google from the command prompt...

on the other computer i have tried to ping google and it just can't find the host, internet and everything, through the same router, works fine on this computer though. when i run the whole msn connectivity troubleshooter thing, it tells me i have a problem with dns but i have no idea how to fix it

sheff - whats the local IP address on each machine (one that works and one that doesnt work) ... are you running DHCP on the router?

If you are using DHCP and If the IP's mismatch (different networks) then the PC that isnt working perhaps got an IP address assigned from another DHCP server on your network (check for DHCP services on both PCs and disable them if your router has DHCP enabled) and in that case you can force a renew from the windows command prompt typing ipconfig /renew after disabling the other DHCP server.

the router has dhcp enabled, but i have no idea what other dhcp would be running on the network. With the local ip address, do you mean the ones assigned to the machine by the router? if yea the working ip is 192.168.1.102, and the non working is automatically assigned an ip of 169.231.22.53, and when i manually assigned it it was 192.168.1.101

if this isnt what you meant, what did you mean by local ip address?

make sure you can ping the router from each computer firstly to make sure they all communicating...
If you get a hostname cannot be found error when pinging externally try manually add DNS servers to your local area network properties (Primary DNS and Alternate DNS).
Sometimes the DNS servers obtained by the router dont work, or your router is just not using them.

yea i can ping the router, and when i ping externally i get host can't be found. I can ping some external ip's though, so i thought it was a DNS issue. I manually set the DNS server's tried several, this allows network traffic like files on the other computer, but not the internet, i tried a different ethernet cable. So a technician i spoke to thinks it could be the ethernet card
