i've been trawling threads here (incl. the "[Read This First] FAQ: Vodacom Data, Data Bundles, 3G, HSDPA, EDGE, etc" thread) for quite a while and can't seem to find the modem/connection settings info that i'm looking for (nor on the freakin vodacom website!!). :o

i have a Dell notebook with built-in HSDPA (Dell Wireless 5530) modem. I bought a Vodacom prepaid SIM, loaded it with airtime and transferreed data bundle to it.

I then inserted the SIM into the notebook modem and created a dialup connection which dials *99# (username and password both empty) but when trying to connect i get an error message saying, "Registering your computer on the network .... Error 734: The PPP link control protocol was terminated".

i've been told i need to do some additional settings on the connection/modem for it to work.

Can someone please provide some info or point me to the correct thread which has these settings??

EDIT: i've also been told that it apparently takes 24 to 48 hours for the data bundle to be activated. i.e. if i only did the data bundle transfer today then i can only connect in like 48 hours. Can anyone verify?

thanks in advance :)...

The bundle activation should be immediate. Why not give 155 a call and see if they can help otherwise the Vodacare walk in centres are a good place to get help as well.

thanks

thanks for tips. will check it out.

on a side note .... i can't believe it is this much of a mission to get this info . i would've thought there were loads of ppl out there with 3G/HSDPA modems built-in to their notebooks that have done this before??

I think most are either using the connection software supplied by Dell or VMC from Vodacom.

I seem to have this number that is in my dialling rules: *99***10#

Not ssure if it will work but might help to give it a try... (no username/password)

You need to specify the internet APN somewhere, if the Dell dashboard s/w does not allow you to enter an APN, then you will have to do it manually in the connection's settings [searchforum]CGCONT[/searchforum].

tried it but still no luck

thanks for the advice!

tried it but it still doesn't work :(

cool. i checked it out and in the Modem's properties (on the "Advanced" tab under "Extra Initialization Commands") I specified:
+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet"

still getting the same "Registering your computer on the network .... Error 734: The PPP link control protocol was terminated" error message unfortunately .. :(

not sure what else i can do now to get this connection working

UPDATE:

i managed to get it working now by simply installing the Vodacom VMC software and setting up connection via that. thanks for the tips anyways guys!
