HI all.

I have a bit of a problem. My dad is purchasing a car, and he needs to insure it. Now we cant find anyone to insure it as they say I wont be allowed to drive it (Im under 25 and its considered a high performance vehicle).

It's vital that it's insured with me as a secondary driver as i will be driving it every so often.

Does anybody know who we can go through?

Thanks

Don't bother with Budget, Outsurance, Miway, etc as they will all rip you off (if they insure you). Contact an insurance broker (no I don't mean some idiot at a call center) can get a proper quote through some place like Mutual and Federal.

Go with a broker and not direct (callcenter) - we got more cover for less (From R380 on First For Women to R200 from Hollard) and pay less excess.

Perhaps my broker sucked, but I actually got a better deal with Outsurance (moved from Santam). Best is to phone around and get quotations, and play them against each other. I've also never actually heard of anybody who couldn't get insurance due to below-25 or high-risk vehicles - it just means that the premiums will be much higher.

Hehe, Ironic...Outsurance charged me R960 for my car. Went to my broker and now I'm on Santam for Car + R125k houshold for R640.

Agree with the peeps here. Don't listen to these "cut out the middleman" advert lies. Broker is usually the best option.

Out of interest.

I am insured with outsurance. I lent my car to a friend for 5 days a few months back. I called them to ask what I must do to add the friend to my insurance & about cost.
They told me that I do not need to do anything as it is for a short bit only. If he was going to use it for more than a week I would need to let them know.

So I can't see why you even need to tell them that you will be using the car every now & then on the odd occasion. The IMPORTANT bit is to NOT be the REGULAR driver. ...

the problem comes about with Outsurance's very loose definition of "regular"... when you are signing up, they claim that all is fine and dandy and that the regular person is the person who drives it most often etc... when you claim (an accident with the non-regular driver), they will try their best to prove that the person driving the car was the regular car, and hence they now dont have to pay a cent... esp if the driver is under 25...

I must admit I do wonder about this under 25 thing.

I was 21 when I bought my first car. It was a high performance vehicle. I did pay more that I would have if I bought a 1400. But I still got insurance. At 23 it dropped a bit & by 25 it went down nicely.

Was through AA back then have since changed it a few times....

& now they won't insure it it seems from what's been said here.

Could it maybe help if the OP does an advanced driving course?

Guys thanks for all the info. Santam will insure for about R500 odd a month.

With regards to brokers, what are the fee's like?

Im also wondering about the advanced drivers, i did hear a little birdy once say thatit would lower premiums.

mine was dropped by R100 after i asked about advanced driving,
so it just depends on your insurance company

Yeah what I would do is watch how much your premiums increase per year through the brokers. We went with a Dial direct and in the beginning they wer cheaper than all the other quotes I got but about 3 years in and their exorbitant increases every year eventually put us way over the other insurance companies. I have now switched to the "cut out the middle man" guys but will monitoring their increases every year.

Also it will differ from region to region. One of my colleagues down in Cape Town is also with Santam and his costs are way lower than what I was paying at my insurance company. got a quote from Santam up in Johannesburg and nearly choked when I got the quote.
