I have a usb stick that I connect to the internet from my laptop Windows 8.

I wish to share this connection via a wifi to a WIFi only iPad

So I have tried two ways.

One is to use the command prompt and the Windows Netsh Utility
when I run I can see
netsh wlan show drivers
hosted network support is available

I use this
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=mywifiname key=mypassword
to create the network
and
netsh wlan start hostednetwork
to start it.

I then go to my mobile stick connection adapter settings and share it to this new wifi connection created by the above command

Then I try to connect to the wifi and I am able to. But I am unable to use the internet or browse. I tried an iPad and Android device. The internet is working from the laptop where the USB stick is plugged in.

I also tried using a program Virtual Router Plus and that does the same. I creates the Wifi and connects to it but internet doesn't work.

Anyone have any ideas or alternate free program I can use?

I think there is a free version of connectify which works very nicely for that sort of thing. Otherwise you might need to add IP details manually to the ipad and set the dns and default gateway to the IP of your laptop.

I tried connectify but the free/trial version doesn't allow me share a mobile internet. If I want to it says buy the pro version so I can't even test it.

My mobile (8TA sim in CellC stick) connection IP is 41.151.*.*

My created wifi hotspot is: 192.168.137.1

The ipad after connecting to the hotspot gets assigned
IP: 192.168.137.226
Router:192.168.137.1
DNS: 192.168.137.1
and that looks correct.

The way you did it was correct and how I have been doing for a long time in urgent situations.

Rather share internet connection on Wi-Fi connection than Mobile Connection. Also initiate the share before you connect to internet or it won't share the active connection in most cases.

You need to setup a new connection to use for the hotspot.

This connection will be shared, then you proceed to share your wlan adapter for your ipad to use through the hostspot connection.

Then pop shell type netsh wlan show drivers

Find

nethwlanshowdrivers.png

If it is not present, you might have a service disabled, not allowing you to host a connection.

If it says it is shared, run netsh wlan set hotspot mode=allow ssid=keating key=mypassword

then type netsh wlan start "hotspotconnection" without quotes

then proceed to specify the right adapter in your wifi's properties as the shared device.
