I just got my PC back from "repair" and I can boot from a 32 bit Windows 7 disc and install it, but not a 64 bit disc.

When I try to boot from the 64 bit one I just get that flashing dash sign and nothing happens. When using the 32 bit one it asks me to press any key to boot from the disc and then it works.

Both are Windows 7 Ultimate.

My specs:

> CPU : Intel Q8400 @ 2.66Ghz (quad core)
> Graphics card : ATI HD 5770 1Gig (HIS)
> RAM : 4Gb PC3 10600 (1333Mhz, DDR3)
> Motherboard : Intel Skyberg (DP45GS)
> PSU : HuntKey greenpower 550W (34A total on 2 12V rails)
> Harddrive : Seagate 320Gb SATA
> Screen : Samsung P2270 21.5" LCD

Thanx :)

um, are you using an "official" windows install disc? Are you sure there is nothing wrong with the disc?

How far did you get? You need to install the Intel ACHI driver before you continue with the 64-bit install, if you have ACHI enabled in your BIOS + make sure your BIOS settings are correct.

Yeah I get what you are saying.

First question, no. And the disc was "manufactured" at a low speed. Can't see why it won't work. Haven't tried it on another PC though.

But 32bit seems to be running well. On the Windows 7 perfomance rating I get 7.2 for cpu, 7.2 for RAM, 7.4 for both graphics and 5.9 for HDD (using SATA, not SSD).

So maybe I should leave it like this. But I am going to try the real test now, Photoshop CS5 with 18Mp photo's. That's what my laptop sucked at.

ACHI driver? Damit! Maybe it is that, now I have already installed 32bit. What does it do?

Just re-installed my 64-bit and man, everything is super fast again!

Windows 7 DEFINILTY still suffers from windows rot, you just don't notice it as it takes a longer period of time.

do yourself a favor and make a fresh install!

You obviously have ADSL, cos the patches are more than 200 MB now. Just the .Net 4.0 client is 41 MB.

Not lekka on Vodacom 3G with 2.3 GB data bundle. :(

However, I use Tuneup Utilities 2010 + weekly defrag, my machine still runs like a dream.

Tried switching on ACHI but still won't boot 64bit disc. Using an external rom though, will try a SATA rom tomorrow.

And with ACHI turned on I can't boot into windows 32 bit that is already installed. I get a blue screen. HAHA a blue screen is a joke to me after the trouble I went through to get this damn motherboard working :)

Shame man, sounds like you're having a hard time.

You can change AHCI back to good ol' SATA, then your 32-bit system should boot, but then you loose all the enhancements & speed you get with AHCI + the Intel Matrix Storage Manager interface.

OK, I dunno if this will help anything more.... but this is what I would do.

1) Burn a new copy of the installation media. Even though you said you did it on slow burn, there might be something wrong with it. Or get a copy from one of us that we know works.

2) I would completely rebuild the system from scratch. I once had the same problem, that no windows would install at all. I took the PC apart into it's smallest component pieces and then re-built it. Then it installed fine.

[SOLUTION]

Thanx for all the help, I finally got it.

I wrote the ISO to a bootable flash drive and installed form there. Seems the ROM I am using is not working properly. After using the official DVD usb tool from Microsoft I made a bootable flash drive and installed 64bit without a hitch.

My PC is running like a dream now, DD3 1333Mhz RAM is really fast compared to DDR2 800Mhz!

Hooray. That was frustrating hey. We've all been there. ;)

Glad you got it sorted.

whats the easiest way to sort out the AHCI driver thing? Integrate it with a windows disc or can i run it separately?

depends on which is easier:
integrate into the iso and reburn, or Install without ACHCi, enable it in the registry abd re-enable it in the BIOS and reboot. Windows will then auto install the driver. Windows 7 does not need this trick but XP does.
