can't log into steam after update

Check if you can login on their website. If that works then at least there is no danger of anything going seriously sideways.

Then delet the blob file and relaunch steam.

if that fails then uninstall & reinstall. Keep the steamapps folder to avoid redownloading everything.

word of warning...some of the newer games don't like the whole copying steamapps folder thing for some reason unknown to me (&everyone else it seems). So you might end up redownloading a gig a five anyway.

Just like the first thing to do when gaming problems arise is to uninstall and reinstall graphics drivers, the first rule of Steam troubles is to delete your clientregistry.blob file. It's found in your Steam folder. Uninstalling doesn't always delete that. Deleting it yourself fixes most weird Steam problems though.

Is is really broken, or is this just the change from a while back? The old way of first starting the install, closing steam and then copying the files over was changed ages ago. You have to copy the files over before you select 'Install'. Then, when it starts the installation it should go through a step where it says something like 'checking for already installed files'.

That doesn't reliably work either...
