Canvas printing

Shop around as the prices can vary by as much as R100!! And also ask the shop if they have any recently printed canvas prints so you can inspect the print quality. Also prices vary a heck of a lot for stretching the canvas on a frame so get quotes for that too!!

I printed this the other day. Printing cost about R180 (1m x 0.65m) and the wood for the frame was about R40.

There is a shop at 4ways mall - I seldom go there but I was at Dischem today and actually noticed, of all things, that the camera shop opposite does this. Dunno about prices

Yea, pretty much anyone with a large format printer can do it. And yea, shop around, some people are crazy with their prices.

The photoshop plugin Genuine Fractals is pretty handy for prepping for canvas. I use the reflect setting to make the side faces.

Also find out what colour model the printer prefers. I had a heck of a time in the beginning because the printer is CMYK rather than RGB.

Is and RGB printer better?
I'm pretty sure all printers are CMYK - some places handle the conversion better than others so if you can do it yourself you should get better results.

Any pointers for Cape Town canvas printing will be appreciated, I want to gift someone one or two of their own photographs, to get them going with the project of arting their apartment with photography.

Gents,

Just one or two tips regarding the canvas printing that I picked up with my own prints:

* Check the print for any marks/scratches before taking it to the framing/blocking guys and take note. If they damage it during the blocking they must pay for a reprint. I had the blocking guy wrap my piece in plastic before I came to pick it up and only saw the damage on it when I got back home.
*Ask the printing guy if the print is smudge free. You get different kinds of ink and canvas. The first one (mentioned above) will smudge or leave marks when touched. I did my 2nd print at another guy and he uses ink and canvas that does not smudge or leave marks. You can wipe it softly with a wet cloth without leaving marks - a little bit more expensive, but worth it. He also gives a 5-10 year (cant remember the exact time) guarantee on the colors not fading.

Who?

That's hectic - I pay R250 per square metre (which is the surface area of A0).

I have never paid list price with any prints done at Orms, on the bigger prints they are happy to give large discounts especially if you are doing multiple prints. Still, R250/m2 is a bargain.
