I'm very fond of fish and especially salmon. I've recently seen allot of cape salmon pop up
and was wondering how it comps to Norwegian salmon?

Any ideas of taste texture differences? I know cape salmon is quite a bit cheaper also but
still pricey in its own right.

The Cape Salmon is known as Geelbek and is within another family as the Pacific and Atlantic salmon family. The taste however is vastly different.

How different? does the flesh look the same is it as sweat as N slamon?

as long as you guys are here, maybe you can assist with another fish enquiry...Recently started to up my fish intake, have cut chicken and meat out of my diet. Bought a Yellow Tail about two weeks ago, ....grilled some fillets on the same day...damn amazing...anyways...last week decided to make a spicy fish head broth... defrosted head in fridge over night.....cooked it up,as I normal do....all good, till about the second helping...than had a weird metallic taste in my mouth...lasted a couple of hours, and was gone. Did some googling, ..was rather alarmed at the possibilities of fish poisoning...anyway, any tell tales to look out for when you purchase catch directly from incoming boats?, do not really wanna go all metal again. Assistance would be much appreciated.

yebocan, did you store it in a cast iron or steel pot? Maybe the broth took the metal taste of the pot.

Heavy metal poisoning is becoming a real problem with ocean fish. I prefer locally farmed freshwater fish like rainbow trout. Besides it is better for the ocean and supports the local industries.

Although I had Geelbek some time ago I did not know that it already went into the Orange (line) and Red (inshore bottom trawl) zones. Thanks letting us know, I believe the specie was still in the Green early last year, don’t see any dates in regard with the studies/research in relation with the population and availability, looking at this may mean that they will implement closed dates (catching) when it reaches green again. Geelbek is easy to catch on the shore in the West Coast using pole-and-line, don’t know about this status…

Deap78, I presume you mean Cape produced salmon and not Cape salmon, which as Stefanmuller points out is Geelbek, which is not the same as Norwegian salmon (aka. Atlantic salmon - Salmo salar).

Cape produced salmon is actually Rainbow and Steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) which is also members of the salmon family and is very similar in look and taste to Norwegian salmon. Three Streams in Franschhoek farms and processes trout on large scale. Scansa Trading (scansatrade.co.za/shop) in Milnerton imports and sells Norwegian salmon as well as Three Streams trout. They have a factory shop too.
