Cape Slammed
Some harsh words from Telkom.
Bastardising? OMG!
One wonders what Cape Town is going to do with a 68000 seater at Green Point post 2010 when they can hardly get 1500 people to attend?
I will say it again.
For longevity, the position of the 2010 Stadium was decided by FIFA to be all glamorous under the shadow of Table Mountain, when for all intense and purposes The Stadium should have been built closer to the people that may actually use it post 2010.
I take it Green Point will be utilised for things like Live Shows etc post 2010, as I fail to see very many Soccer Fans living in that area?
Oh well, Trevor has a Budget Surplus, so who is worried. At least the money is being spent on something tangible.

JOHANNESBURG – Cape Town crowds were yesterday hit with severe criticism from the new sponsors of the Telkom Knockout Cup for “poor attendance” at the competition’s matches.
Zikie Molusi, Telkom Marketing and Advertising Director, yesterday said the sponsors of the Telkom Knockout Cup would in future rather host their matches anywhere in the country than in the Mother City.
Molusi said he wasn’t satisfied with the manner in which the Cape sides had marketed the competition – the highest paying tournament on the continent, with winners pocketing R4,25-million.
Ajax Cape Town only attracted 1 500 supporters for last week’s clash against Golden Arrows at the Green Point Stadium.
“Cape Town needs to be sorted out once and for all,”Molusi said at the Wanderers Club yesterday.
“They are bastardising our product, and it is unforgivable that teams don’t give us at least 5 000 supporters.”
Not satisfied with the poor turnout at Cape Town, Molusi said it was up to the clubs to lure fans to stadiums.
“The responsibility to fill stadiums lies with the clubs. There are many ways that they can implement marketing plans,” Molusi said.
Ironically, this year’s edition of the Vodacom Challenge saw Newlands Stadium packed to the rafters when Kaizer Chiefs hosted English Premiership giants Manchester United.
Even the South African Football Association (Safa) has not considered using Cape Town as a venue to host Bafana Bafana matches in recent times.
The last time the national team played there was against Saudi Arabia in 1999.
Other major sponsors in the league are also reluctant to take Cup finals to the Cape.
The draw for the competition’s quarterfinals took place yesterday with no surprises for fans.
As per tournament rules, top teams, Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and Moroka Swallows were seeded and won’t meet each other in the last- eight stages of the tournament.
Sundowns will host Black Leopards, while Pirates, after their heroic win against Maritzburg United on Sunday, will entertain Cape side Santos.
Silver Stars will play host to Chiefs, while Swallows will travel to Cape Town to meet Ajax.
