Cape Town Murder prompts hackathon call

Hi biometrics,

We are organizing a 48 hr 'Hackathon' to get an app built. We need people to volunteer their skills, knowledge and resources to rapidly build and distribute the app.

If you are a potential skills volunteer please message us with your contact details and skills on [email protected].

We will add all volunteers to our trello board where we have a lot of information about the plan for now.

We should have a clear application design and plan by Monday afternoon.

So far we have organised a venue and supplies for next weekend, we have about 30-40 people who ave already committed to help, but we will need many more.

This is going to be an awesome challenge to take part in and we will make the 48 hours something to remember.

There are already plenty of apps. People don't use them. If these people had been signed up to Eblockwatch this might have ended differently.

This is only the initial concept, and we have some very good people working on the design user flows etc. to get everything ready for when we kick this off, expect this to change and improve over time, and any input, advice and suggestions are welcome.

The idea is to have an application that you would sign up to, and similarly to Airbnb, you will have to go through validation processes (log and validate ID etc.) so as to ensure that the bad elements are not able to access and participate.

A user can then go and create and event such as: I am going for a 10km trail run leaving from Constantia Village, my pace is 6km per hour, anyone want to join me?”, or "I'm walking from x to y starting at 16:00, anyone want to join me."

Other users will then be able to subscribe to the event (organiser can approve or reject application), and all participants will be able to see who is joining the run, walk, hike etc.

If someone can no longer make the event, they remove themselves and the application notifies the rest of the participants so that you are not waiting for a participant.

You can set minimum numbers for event to take place and number of positive reviews per runner plus have access to their social media profiles to check them out.

Once everyone has arrived, you go , and afterwards the application should give you the ability to rate fellow participants to allow future event partners to evaluate the profile for inclusion or exclusion from future events.

The key is that this is a social initiative, and although it may mushroom into something big and great, the immediate need is to address the social ills of not being able to enjoy the outside freedoms without having to do so in a managed group.

The idea is an app that will allow people to organise safe outings, such as running, hiking etc, either in advance, or at short notice.

You're not wrong, but we want to build something that is not about reacting, but rather preventing.

Reacting in a timeous manner is absolutely critical. Eblockwatch has members in every suburb in SA, as well as links to law enforcement and community patrols. Once you are signed up, they also don't need to bother with permission, they can begin tracking you immediately. Without those permissions in place, you are going to be hobbled the same way as the SAPS were hobbled in this case - waiting for a judge to sign an order.

EDIT: But I do appreciate what you guys are planning to do and I hope it goes as far as possible!

Would be nice to see an app that drops a persistent beacon that alerts other app users in the vicinity to their last location (where the app was activated), as well as a second location that shows their current / true position. Seems like it would be better served by having a gps device strapped under a sock or hidden in the shoe etc. that could be activated before setting out to run and be trackable by other users in the vacinity should an alarm be triggered, or should they just not show up for dinner their position might be traceable. Trackable implants perhaps?

I've actually been wondering why the cellular companies haven't been jumping all over this for years now. The technology is there. Why aren't they selling devices and subscriptions for all kinds of tracking devices that we can wear or put into our critical equipment? The vehicle tracking companies haven't taken this far enough either.
