This is a shameless half-cross posting to the Linux forum as I know many scripters use Perl too :)

Cape Town has a Ruby group, a Python group, a PHP group but sadly no Perl Mongers group. Quite a terrifying thought!

I know quite a number of Perl scripters/coders reside in this lovely city, and I'm sure quite a number has something interesting to share. Hackathons are cool, right? grinding the code? asking your buddy for his thoughts?

Lets try get something going!

Why perl when you can just custom compile your own Apache that does things even better? That is my dream anyway. I love perl but never got around to pervue its treasures. Wasn't that long ago that you couldn't go without a sss tag and a csv

I'm not sure why you are comparing Perl to Apache. Perl is not a web server. Perl is a scripting language, similar to other languages like PHP, Ruby and Python.

You can use Perl to create rich web applications, both under Apache (CGI/FCGID/mod_perl) using various MVC frameworks. Just look at the OTRS ticket tracking system and Best Practicals RT (request tracker) for two of the most widely used and well known ticket tracking systems. It has many other uses though, for instance one of the most powerful anti-spam systems ASSP is written in Perl too.

Personally I use a mixture of C, C++, Perl, Python depending on the use case and which language best suites the purpose at hand.
