Electric busses are very popular for city public transport networks. Not sure what you're on about.

Honestly electric makes sense. The busses do relatively short distances within the city then return to the depot for charging each day.

Golden Arrow has been testing out the idea for a while now in CoCT and it's worked very well for them. The highest amount of busses are needed for the peak morning and evening worker commutes. Golden Arrow reckons they can run half the fleet in the middle of the day while the other half charges and swaps out in the middle of the day to allow the rest of the fleet to charge ahead of that evening peak.

They're running 20 electric busses at the moment with plans to expand to 120 by the end of the year.

Europe's big into electric busses too. Manufacturers are struggling to meet demand currently.

but I mean... if a third world extremely modern country renowned for it's innovations like Chile is doing it then I guess we must be behind? (maybe?)

I heard Zim's got some incredible technology developed by Terrance Howard that they're going to be putting into cars soon. We are indeed so far behind...

EV busses make sense, but why only now???, EV busses are hardly a new idea.

rest of the world has Hydrogen and even more advanced technology for public transport, here were only starting to use EV busses.
we really are pathetic sometimes, like some kind of backward state that hasnt advanced to where it should be in comparison to the west.

China has to donate us a few EV busses, when they were on American and European roads a LONG time ago.

thats what makes me angry sometimes, we cant develop this sort of thing ourselves, we cant start up a bus body manufacturer that makes EV busses and exports them all over the world?

we have to beg China to sell us some Temu Busses and hope they dont fall apart.

My point is that most of the world is still going through the EV change over. SA slightly behind here, but not by much compared to how far behind we are on other things. Hydrogen busses are an extreme minority across the planet with niche adoption.

I'm not sure why one would regard hydrogen busses as more advanced than EV busses. Seems more like different horses for different courses. If anything hydrogen busses are more expensive, there's less refueling infrastructure and they're less efficient. I'd argue the reason we haven't seen much hydrogen technology adoption is because it's frankly inferior, not because it's a new superior technology.

I agree with you on the local manufacturing thing though. That South Africa isn't a better India than India at this point is an absolute travesty.

Electric buses are great, makes a huge difference to the air quality in big cities. Was walking around in Glasgow a couple years ago and it's, excuse the pun, but a breath of fresh air to have an electric bus pass by when you're walking around instead of a smelly diesel one.

I don't ever see Golden Arrow's fleet or any other bus company in SA going full electrical. Wait until those taxi guys start burning busses in Khayelitsha or Nyanga, let's see if they'll want an EV there

I doubt any bus company would ever go full electrical. It just doesn't currently work for all routes.

Still as I said they're officially aiming for 120 electrical busses by the end of the year. That's already 10% of their whole fleet. It's significant.

It takes more money and energy to convert to Hydrogen than clearly what you can imagine.

Hydrogen Cars

    You will also need to run your power plant hectically to create hydrogen. Will cost more also

Rest of the world is electric. Even they shy from Hydrogen. Germany has 2364 Hydrogen fuel cell cars in total. This compared to 1.4 million electric cars. They are the 2nd biggest hydrogen car user in the world.

The limited adoption of hydrogen cars is partly due to the high cost of hydrogen, limited refueling infrastructure, and the availability of only a few hydrogen car models. Meanwhile, electric cars benefit from a more developed charging network and a wider range of models.
