Hi

Did anyone get a CoCT WMD installed at your property? They came today to my residence to install because collectively we are over the limit. What they don't know is that the landlord has several units and there's more than the average 4 people in the yard.

How do we tell them that there's 7 people in total on the property?
Also, what does this device do? Does it limit pressure or cuts off the water?

Sometimes the system is not fair, I for example have 8 people living in my household (currently 10). So obliviously I use more electricity and water. Electricity gets charged on a sliding scale and I would really be pissed of if they would limit my water supply especially seeing that I am very strict on water and energy use and constantly educate everyone.

I'd lodge a query with them, and if it isn't resolved quickly, pull the damn thing out. Its utter BS that they don't first contact you and do some investigation as to why your usage is higher than usual

In case you hadn't realised, Cape Town is staring down the barrel of a gun when it comes to water. I doubt the municipality has the time or the resources to investigate and verify thousands of stories/explanations as to high water usage.

CoCT can now manage and read your meter without remotely. The meter is electronic.

I totally understand that, but you can't go around just cutting water like that, if OP was genuinely abusing the allocation then sorry for him, but he's not, so CoCT have dropped the ball, it doesn't take that long to investigate, and hear the users side of the story anyway

They are not "cutting water"; they are limiting the supply.

Yes the water cuts off after the daily limit has been reached. Yesterday it cut off around 11:30pm. This is really unfair as the other people on the property used the most, even my share. I know that for a fact because I was out the whole day. I did not even shower yesterday or wash dishes. I usually shower at night and when I got back it was out.

That is harsh. You need to speak to your landlord?

One of my rental houses has 6 adults living there, but I pay the Council charges. I received this letter from Council 3 weeks ago about excessive water. I sent an email but received no response. On Thursday the water dept arrived to fit this device. Despite me showing them my account which shows a monthly consumption of 5500 litres (5.5kl) they went ahead and fitted it. None of my upstairs taps operate, the geyser in the roof will not fill with water, so I must use a kettle to warm water. I tried for many hours to get hold of someone in water on Thursday and on Friday visited the Plumstead office. They were not really interested and went on and on about saving water. The actual clerk refused to look at my invoice. Tomorrow it is my attorney's job. What a bugger-up!

Attorney had to listen to a lecture from a lady who refused to be interrupted, which lasted 4 mins. After this, he asked her if she had looked at the account for my address. She said this would take some time, so he asked how long. Another tirade about how busy she was and people do not take the water crisis seriously, etc. The answer - 15 mins.

He calls her back and she says she has it, so what. He asks her to look at page 2 which shows 5.5kl with a fee of R22,00 and asks why a limiter has been fitted, and also adds that Council's declaration of not being responsible for damage to customer's water reticulation is illegal and will soon be tested in court

She will see to it that the limiter is removed, but quickly adds that there will be a fee for such work

That is crazy. A fee to have it removed when you didnt need it in the first place.

I also wonder what will happen to my internal plumbing. Definitely doing no good to my geyser. Can hear it when the water actually cuts off. And the water hammer

That is something you need to fix anyway. And yes it may be necessary to ensure all the vacuum breakers and other control valves are working correctly. Not in favour of a geyser being "on" when the water supply is cut off.
Does the geyser still drain when the cold water supply is cut off? Then you need to also ensure the geyser element switches off when the water supply is cut.

Getting complicated to handle all of this now. Wonder what the insurance companies reaction is going to do when persons start claiming for geyser replacements because of this.

What do I need to fix anyway? Sure, a geyser reolacement in a few years but this will wear out the plumbing/geyser even more. So far it literally has been cutting every night.

No my geyser stays off most of the time. Also does not drain when the water cuts off. If I open hot water while the main is off, nothing comes out.

Okay that means the vacuum breakers are correctly installed and preventing the geyser from draining. the water hammer means the pipes are not secured somewhere in the roof. easy to find and fix with proper supports. Copper lines or plestik?

Chrisc , did your attorney manage to get the limiter removed/ lifted? Please advise

i notified the city last year that i had 8 residents at my place trying to avoid getting a nasty bill. Instead the City installed WMD on my property. They gave 700litres/day which is 87l/day per person. Now instead of reducing my bill because i was now using less water, i am getting horrible bills since the device was installed. Every month iam at CCT trying to rectify the previous month billing errors.

All i can tell you is that you can apply to have the limit increased but i guess based on the fact that they installed for you using level 6b restriction, you can apply to 50l by number of people at your place. After you apply, they will come to verify that there is 10 people. if approved you will get 10x 50l.

My Water was cut. I don't have a drop of water. And 2 small. Children with their mom visiting me.
It is my basic human right to have water.
