Cape Town's Ghost Squad

Official City vehicles have CCT plates. Real Ghost Squad cars don't. The days of looking out for roof racks and roof mounted containers are also over. Things have moved on. The Ghost Squad don't have to chase down anyone so no more fancy hot cars either. The cameras and analytics on them do the work and they do it very well. The hot marked vehicles will be around soon enough when needed.

I have to agree here.

Taxi drivers are experienced in...
- paying bribes
- driving in emergency lanes
- endangering lives with their reckless driving
- killing each other over routes
- ignoring stop signs and robots
- stopping just where they want to
- driving into oncoming traffic
- etc

I lolled = so true! :D

What next... Why not put cameras on all streets, our gardens, houses, monitor all communications and maybe even tag every person with a tracker

Technology is doing what cops cannot concentrate on doing (and keep on doing) ... it helps people do better things. People demand a safe and secure city and technology is used to help make that a reality, and the results are very promising.

Why don't we just install police tracker on every single car then starting with yours?

Whats with your negativity. at least they trying to make a difference, unlike the cANCer

I don't agree with invisible policing. They can put up visible cameras and have thousands of cop cars standing and driving around and I'd be very happy. I just have a massive issues with them hiding it. After all, where do you draw the line...

I'd say go for it. If you have nothing to hide it won't be a problem.

Cool, so what about a tracker on yourself as soon as you exit your place and walk on a public street. What about monitoring all of your phone traffic and your internet traffic? What about cameras in your house, after all you may do illegal stuff there...

It will keep criminals on their toes. Big Brother is watching their every move. the police can use their resources better. its a win win situation as i see it.

No it won't. The average criminal won't even know that there are ghost squads on the roads. It has been proven that visible policing is far more effective than invisible.

If they don't mind the occasional porn or sexting they can go for it although seeing me walk around nekkid might be a bit much for the controllers.

At least these vehicles can provide video evidence and move around in suspicious surroundings. Take note that they are not allowed to take action, but rather report. In time the visible police can show up and take action. Crimes not happening in eye sight of visible police will also be dealt with now.

I am glad this type of policing is happening, only that there is always police corruption somewhere.

So why not rather install cameras in normal police cars?

Hardly. We need visible policing to reduce crime, not hidden

Yes but at least their traffic controls are all based on visible policing. All traffic cameras for example are clearly marked and visible.

Its impossible for the police to be every where at once... that is why we need technology to help them.

Have cops on every street corner sounds more like a police state than a ghost squad does.
