Cape Town's Ghost Squad

I doubt that would happen any time soon...

Oh you think so ...

The Ghost Squad is the tip of the iceberg. Cape Town will not be a good place for criminals. Isn't that what we all want and expect from good governance?

And now with LTE it will all happen so much faster ... Time for the networks to partner with the authorities to help sponsor fast wireless access to fight crime in Cape Town ... :)

No. I lived in the States for 6 years, 3 years primarily in NY. You are watched ALL the time, cops riding behind you running your plates ALL the time, sounds bliss right, NO! Once we go down that slippery slope there is no going back. Dammit forgot to signal, fine. Dammit, went 62 in a 60 zone, fine. Did not know that my right front hand side fog light has a crack, fine.

Agreed the argument could be made that this will absolutely sort all the carp out on our roads and I cannot dispute that, but after that, there is no going back.

Grep, society is already at "no going back". Crime in this country forces it upon us. Criminals are getting smarter and smarter ... the big ones even employing hackers. Law Enforcement is forced to become smarter. Technology is offering hope in a battle that for many seems lost already. Those here should rejoice ... opportunities aplenty to come up with products, software etc to combat lawlessness/crime on many fronts. I wish private sector would get more involved to help opex dry authorities to win the fight. Tech in Law Enforcement is now a reality and the tech is getting better and easier to implement.

I don't know why some are against "ghost" policing.

Catching people unaware is good as it forces people to always obey the rules of the road.

Abzo, yes, Hollywood makes movies/mini-series/etc of the imaginations of visionaries ... not exactly but captures the heart of the visions. Such visionaries are at first ridiculed ...

I'm not ridiculing. I'm all for it.

CA 189-271 (KIA) just now passed traffic on Plattekloof Road in Cape Town on the moving platoon of traffic's left-hand side USING THE CYCLE LANE! This is the sort of crap we're talking about.

If visible policing was present the driver would have played nice until out of sight of the marked vehicle. Now with the Ghost Squad the perps are caught in the action.

Kia, what do you expect

Saw one of the new Ghost Squad cars. Was a Chevy Cruze sedan, saw the camera mounted in the grill. Normal CA plates and no other tell tale signs it was a police car besides a shark fin lookalike antenna on the boot and the two cops in the front seats. They were sitting in the yellow lane in peak hour traffic. No doubt waiting for a suspicious looking car to follow...I guess?

They have blue lights on the grill and back windows too. Only visible when switched on.
