I am going to Cape Vidal for a week and need to be on standby with a laptop for emergencies in which case I will need 3G access. I have Telkom Mobile, MTN and Vodacom sims/modems available but the coverage seems patchy to non-existent.

Does anybody have experience with 3G access in the general area or know if there are any Wifi hotspots around ?

I'll bump this again for you by asking what you would possibly want to do at St Lucia now they they've banned 4x4's on the beaches? Hasn't that place become like a ghost town now? ;/ Such a shame! The place was once a thriving, beautiful and exotic holiday destination, especially for avid fishermen. We can thank the ANC and spiteful Mr Vali Moosa for spoiling that for everyone

Last time I was there was about 5 years ago, and they did have decent cellular coverage in the towns themselves but not so great on the sand road. Suggestion would be to check the coverage maps provided by each service provider you plan to utilize

It's a family thing, just for the camping and walks on the beach. I checked the maps, Vodacom seems best but I think I may be limited to Edge which would not suffice. Are there any towns nearer than St. Lucia (is Ranger a town ?)

Regarding 4x4's on the beach, I'm against it for that vicinity. In particular I remember how as a kid, further north, at Sodwana we camped with just about nobody there. The rockpools were so abundant with creatures, it really grieves me to see it in the current state. Human encroachment not good.
