Capitec Bank - Issues with latest update (Rooted Handset)

I see that the first thing the Capitec application does when starting up after installing the latest version is that it updates itself.
I am starting to suspect that this new built in updater is what is breaking. Perhaps it requires Google Apps Play services?
New app, so I'm pretty sure they haven't ironed out all the bugs.
I started up the app earlier today and it went through the whole update cycle, before I could log in.

Not even 5 minutes later I checked for updates on the Play Store and wouldn't you know it, Capitec was one of the updates.🤦‍♂️

Yes I think your theory is pretty likely.

After all it does not work on some up to date Android 14 phones but it works on an Android 12 (LineageOS) phone that is two years and some months behind on security patches, has an unlocked boot-loader, USB debugging enabled and who knows what else. I stopped checking what else could be deemed insecure because the Capitec app works on that phone which is clearly the most insecure of the lot by a long way...

I would like to see how some of the commentators who keep banging on about "it's for your own good because of security" in this thread attempt to explain that one.

It is a pity that I recently lent my Hauwei test phone to someone who broke their phone or I could have tested that too.

how do I root a tablet? I have an old Samsung that I want to use with my CCTV but it is so old it can't even access the play store anymore.
First thing I would consider doing is trying a custom Android OS such as LineageOS etc - XDA-developers.net is an excellent resource to learn more.

My Samsung is rooted running Ananjasur Rom. No issues with Capitec.
Methinks if you change the kernel from original it might have a fit.
Reload the original kernel and see what happens.

If you rooted or using kernelSU ensure that the play integrity module installed and up to date..

Capitec pushed out version 3.1.12 (24090900) and now:
  • It no longer crashes on LineageOS 21 (Android 14)
  • It no longer crashes on GrapheneOS (Android 14)
To get it work with in GapheneOS it is necessary to enable 'Exploit Protection compatibility mode" which entails "disabling some of the GrapheneOS exploit protections". I suppose because banking apps are secure or something....

Which all means that @SubtleBeast was correct.
