Capitec Clients - Scam Warning

Hi All,

I received an SMS from 072 300 0003, purporting to be from Capitec Bank, and claiming that my Notifications have been disabled, and that I will be contacted by a consultant to reset them. I immediately called the real Capitec Contact Centre, who confirmed this is a scam, and recommended I change my mobile banking pin, which I promptly did.

At 13:08, I received a call from the same number, and the guy on the line claimed to be calling from Capitec's HO in Stellenbosch, and he said he would need some details to reactivate my Notifications. I told him I was busy, and that he must call back later. I again called Capitec's Contact Centre, who again confirmed it was a scam, and recommended I contact my cellphone service provider, and inform them that I do NOT want to do a simswap. I am with MTN, and 173 was useless (no option to speak to a live person), so will go to a local MTN shop, and see if that helps.

Thanks, have reported it that number.

Sure enough, someone from MTN called me back (for real), and added my number to a simswap watchlist, plus increased the steps required IF a simswap is requested, which only I can complete. Just after this, received an SMS that a simswap was requested on my number, so phoned MTN again and pressed buttons till I could talk to a person and not a computer, who confirmed the aforementioned arrangement, as well as cancelling the request, although they said they couldn't find it on their system, the woman I was speaking to said it had probably being made through the "self-help" menu.

I am just curious as to how the scammers that had my number, knew who I banked with, or they just took a chance like those emails that say you need to confirm your internet banking login or something?

Could be random.

If I phone 20 random numbers now I would get to somebody with a Capitec account.

Yeah, that is probably what they were doing. Do people still fall for this these days?

Thanks for the info B.

I'm with CellC though - this is scary stuff.

Not sure if the SP makes a difference, just mentioned it thinking of the controversy with ABSA clients who are also with MTN.

Just to share my story. I know that not everyone is a criminal.

I opened my account at capitec to pay for stuff like Netflix and hulu because you have to use a dns or proxy just to access the payment page.

The next day someone opened several accounts at stores with a copy of my ID which I had only given to capitec as I have proper accounts with fnb which give enough credit that I have no store accounts.

A month later and several affidavits later and my name is blacklisted on transunion.

The saps refuse to open a case as nothing was stolen from me.

So the short of my story is that capitec staff could easily have sold your details.

I have been with Capitec for years, first time this has happened, but I guess it is a possibility. Interesting that it happened today, when I received a fairly substantial sum into my account yesterday.

Indeed the problem is the cops would do jack even if you give them the scammers number they are not interested in going to a judge to get a court order that will allow them to track the number and catch these criminals.

The police need to get more involved because these guys are running wild currently and taking money from the people who generally dont know these things, poor, elderly naive etc...

You can open a case, it's called fraud and identity theft.

Follow the procedures as laid out below, given the facts stated I am sure the ombudsman will find in your favour if it goes that far:

Maybe someone "inside" is watching for larger monetary movements....

Very sad thought, actually

Say,whaaaat!I very much doubt thats a coincidence....did you have capitec maybe flag your account as high risk and maybe stop all internet/telephone banking for now just to be safe.

I don't know if Capitec has those accounts that can only be accessed by you personally being in a branch but that would probably be the way to keep that money safe and keep only the needed minimum in your normal account. My wife does it that way on FNB minimizes risk, she used to work at FNB so she knows how peoples money gets stolen and thats the safest way apparently according to her.

If I'm not mistaken its a call account at FNB.

I tried many times at a local police station.

The police woman there has done like six of my affidavits and I ask each time if I can open case.

I even went at night to try a different shift to see if I get a different answer.

They can't say "no" to opening a case. You should just ask for the station manager.

SAPS is generally full of sht when it comes to opening cases. The favoured approach is to just enter it into their log (or whatever its called...some arb journal thing) instead of opening a ticket. Helps reduce crime stats apparently.
