Howzit ladies and gents. Any of you using Capitec Connect? I am thinking of perhaps talking to my SO about porting to them seeing that they are pretty affordable with cheaper flat rates for data that does not expire (except the 10GB bundle that does expire).

How is the network quality though? I know they run on Cell C who in turn runs one MTN, depending if you are contract or prepaid. Do they support VoLTE for example? Data speeds?

The SO is currently not employed so when we have loadshedding at home he uses his phone as a hotspot and it is getting rather expensive.

Hi Ockie

Have a look at MegsApp.

It's a MVNO that runs on the MTN network and they have a flat 69c per min call rate, and they also have non-expiring data bundles.

Note: They do not support VoLTE at the present time. Their customer support have said to me that they will support VoLTE sometime in 2024.

Lol R188 to have a sim card delivered? They can go suck a tailpipe.

Wow...they made it really easy in store. I just did a letter for my SO to say he lives with me with a copy of my Vox fibre bill for his RICA. 5 clicks and OTP into their system and port is now in progress. They even have their own branded SIM cards. Thought it might be MTN or Cell C Sims they use.

Will report back one his number is ported.

OK...so his number ported. Data is working. Works on 4G Advance. He can call out, but when I call him it goes straight to voicemail. Maybe routing tables still updating.

Data speed is really not bad. Also really easy and quick to buy Data and Minute bundles on the Capitec app.

No VoLTE though. Perhaps that still needs to be provisioned.

Stupid question: you mentioned loadshedding, is the fibre dead during loadshedding?

RCS in Messages app working too.

I can call him now with a normal call. Still no VoLTE however. Phone switches to 3G take receive or make a call. Pity

We do t have a battery for the router.

You dont? So get one. Some of us have been running some sort of gizzu type of setup for longer than I can remember. My two are heading for 3 years now. Going at R600-R700 a pop for a small unit or R1199 for a 69WH version.

Cannot imagine a world where I would rather hotspot and buy bundles, or volunatarily sign up for a rundle - recurring revenue (for the networks) bundle, above having a mini-ups.

What am I missing here?

We did have one two years ago or so. It was a Mercer ups. It lasted like 6 months and then the battery went. It would last like 10 minutes when power died and then it was flat. All it was running was the fibre CPE and WiFi router. Did not bother to get another one.

No man, you bought the wrong UPS & battery technology. Those conventional UPS units wont last. That is like hoping to get 5G speeds from the 5G tower with your GPRS device. They have lead-acid batteries that take 220V to charge 12V, and take that 12V to 220V, only for the router etc to take it back down to like 5v. Inefficient and made to run a PC for a few minutes while you shut it down.

You need a mini-ups. It is a once-off cost. They have lithium batteries and cut out some of the uncececary conversions being done. Because they are also fit for purpose (think, 5G device getting 5G speeds next to a 5G tower), they run for hours on end. Every single person that I know, personally, now has one. Waste of money to not have one and to be buying bundles. @wingnut771 back me up here

During an extended outage my setup remains on for most of the day. Probably the best Return on investment that I have made into any of my network gear.

Are you running some serious gear for your wifi?

Yip, this is what runs my wifi/router for the last 2 years. It only lasts 1:45 minutes these days which is fine as its 3am and I'm sleeping, otherwise the bigger inverter powers it during waking hours and it just acts like a UPS during the changeover.
