This may be a stupid question but will the Capitec token used for internet banking work overseas or does it only work in South Africa?

Do you mean the physical token device?

Then yes. It's a number generator, it will generate a number anywhere.

If it's something the app, I have no experienced with it.

Thanks, yes I mean specifically the physical token.

Remember, we are in the Southern Hemisphere, so hold the device upside down if you travel north of the equator.

I just asked Capitec this question last week.

They said the token will work overseas but if you lose it there is no way to access your internet banking until you come back home and get another token. Bit of a shlep if you are travelling long term.

They also said that the app will not work overseas because it is connected to a specific South African mobile number... and yes, I made the whole argument that apps can run off data etc but they are insistent that it will not work.

I don't know if that means the app WOULD work with the SA number activated on roaming - I didn't check because I will be using a local sim card when I travel...

The Capitech token def works outside SA. I've used mine numerous time while working around africa.
BTW..I have used it above and below the equator, also on offshore installations where you're physically located in Africa but your Internet connection is via satellite to the USA.

Cool thanks for the feedback. I left my token in SA lol. My GF will be bringing thank goodness.
Didn't set up the app and no longer have an SA number so not going to worry about that.

Capitec token will work anywhere in the world - even on a ship. The token has a serial number which is linked to your banking profile every 3 minutes the token will generate a new number but capitec know the number as the token has a set sequence preloaded of numbers which capitec have loaded on their database. That's why when you take the token option before you leave the branch you use the consultants computer to check if everything is functioning.

traveling overseas notify your bank that way they can open the window for international purposes. Example you can arrive there and 1 transaction will work. Some banks will send a form whereby you have to sign.. Neighboring countries no need cause banks have offices there that connect to South Africa.
