OK, after almost two years of experiencing this 'cap of death', I think I've got it figured:
- If you run out of your allocated bandwidth before the end of the month, you get your slow down to 64K, as you should.
- If you are almost out of bandwidth, and you purchase another gig, you are fine UNTIL you run out again. At that point the 'cap of death' hits you, and the only way to get any bandwidth going again, is to to purchase another gig.
This used to be a big bone of contention with me, but since the purchased bandwidth is now carried over it's not a problem anymore.
So my conclusion is that the bandwidth manager works fine if you haven't purchased any extra gigs, but it stops you in your tracks if you have purchased more gigs and then run out of bandwidth again.
You do get a 'sort of death by cap' if your signal is bad, hence them wanting to come out and do some tests. BUT YOU TRY AND EXPLAIN TO THEM THAT IF YOU RUN AT FULL SPEED AND THEN GET 'CAP OF DEATH' THAT THERE IS NO SIGNAL PROBLEM AND THAT THEY DON'T HAVE TO WASTE YOUR TIME OR THEIRS TO COME OUT......sheez!
Anyways, this has been explained to them ad nausium, so I just ended up upgrading from 3G to 6G to avoid the problem. I just got fed-up asking them for a 1G refund every month.
So if you get hit by the 'cap of death' again, just purchase another gig and your line AND SIGNAL [sic] will magically come back to life. You can then either keep it as a carry-over, or phone them to demand a refund for the forced purchase of an extra gig.
