Morning everyone,

I would like to hear how many people - since last night - has not been able to access any sites, yet you can still use skype, MSN, Iburst Hub with no issues

I phoned the iburst helpdesk last night yet the only answer the guy gave me was "There were a lot of complaints about it, I have no answer for you"
Such typical answers from the helpdesk... yet he did not offer to find out what the problem was or make any attempt to find out if anyone is working on it.

P.S I am capped... did I get the damn Cap of Death again?

Strange. I'm also capped - but downloaded average 30KB/s last night. Sounds like their throttling software went haywire on them.

nah downloading/uploading is fine but the problem is I cannot browse ANY sites

hhhm, fishfly, taking a guess , would say u are a victim of death by cap. Just phone helpdesk and request they give you an extra gig...

As you can see from my post count, I'm new to the world of iBurst.
I had the similar problem with being hardcapped yesterday and could
only access the iBurst website. I phoned and the guy said. "I'll have to talk
to my supervisor as I can do nothing about it". You mention that Shaun Green can be phoned about it. Won't he mind that a ranom dude phones him about iBurst capping problem?

I dont think so, I have phoned him randomly before, he seemed happy to help and I only post that info her because he has posted the same stuff on the site before and said if you get the Cape of Death you should give him a PM/e-mail/call.

Well he works for the company and its their problem I guess, so as long as its during office hours it shjould be fine. Rather dont phone him on a saturday night or anything.

You're capped and downloading at 30kb/s???? That's amazing! I thought you can get only 64kb/s connection speed after your cap is reached.

The problem fishfly and Anno had seems identical to a problem that I experienced a couple of months back. Sean got a senior tech to phone me and the tech insisted that it was not Cap of Death because, although I couldn't access web sites, I could use VPN and also connect to secure http sites. He said it was caused by poor signal quality.

I moved my modem to a better location and that solved the problem. Or so I thought. Same thing happened yesterday afternoon, just as I went over my 3GB allowance - amazing how they pick up the moment you exceed your allowance but my usage stats aren't updated until after I restart my modem. Anyway, maybe one does need a near perfect signal to prevent this happening but, short of short of getting the council to chop down a few oak trees, I'm stuck with what I have.

And the question remains: why can I access secure web sites and conduct troublefree TS sessions over VPN, but cannot access normal web sites??

That tech must be lying to you. I have pretty bad signal especially lately, and when I phoned and told them about it they also said it must be my low signal. Yet this month I get capped, and it is fine, with exactly the same signal (no doubt worse than yours, -102Db) as last month when it would apparently not work because of my low signal.

The symptons you are talking about is exactly what people here labelled Death By Cap, you are supposed to still be able to get through to https, MSN, any P2P thats normally wokrs after cap and VPN. Infact almost anything except http works when you get this.

I would love for them to explain how your signal can make HTTP only die once you get capped. SImpy explain to them that everythin else works and they will have to do somethign about it, thats how I got mine fixed.

ok spoke to the supervisor of the call center... he acknologed the problem and gave me a free gig so I could do my inet banking b4 the 1st :w00t: but oddly enough this time the "Death by Cap" actually blocked me from accessing the Mail Server from Iburst... it's never happened before.

the concept of a bad signal could not be possible my current latency is -59 and no tower switching after I found this optimum position to Utilize the Hyde Park Basestation, I am about 500m away from the tower with a clear line of sight unless you say that the air around me is causing interferance with iburst)

EHV, what did they do to fix it? And did they say that it would a permanent fix? Last time I checked my signal fluctuated in the -85 to -95db range and should be better now with the modem near a window, so it is a bit better than yours :)

...but oddly enough this time the "Death by Cap" actually blocked me from accessing the Mail Server from Iburst... it's never happened before.

I forgot to mention that on both occasions I couldn't access the iBurst or GMail SMTP servers, or any POP servers.

Thanks to all for putting the signal issue to rest - I'm going to save this thread for the next time I have to deal with them regarding the DbC issue.

In an older discussion about DBC, I have stated that the block only seems to be on ports: 80,8080,21,standard pop, and standard smtp. They limit you wit hrespect of normal usage, but tend to do nothing about the BW hungry stuff like the DC hub (where it is possible to run up very many GB). This leads me to believe that it isnt an error in their system, but rather a calculated problem, where somebody who doesnt read the forum, is in urgent need of internet, and doesnt feel like arguing will rather go out and buy extra bandwidth...

On the topic of wierd capping, I have had times where I managed to get through to gmail pop, but not a normal pop address...

They simply gave me a gig, no permanent fix, but it hasnt happened since. Last time Shaun explained the probelm he said it randomly affected a few users every month ,so im not shure if there is a permanent fix. But a friend of mine got his sorted out without them buying him a gig, so there is a proper fix, not shure if that one is meant to be permanent or not though.

lol looks like the 1gig carried over to this month... lets see if I get charged for it.

Another strange problem is this:

I am signed with IBurst through Fusionreactor, when I phone in to Iburst requesting for help on this issue they tell me that they cannot log any ticket for my calls - due to some unknown issues.

Is iburst utilizing such a useless system to monitor the user account details?

Well, now I am suffering the dreaded Cap O' Death as well (I tend to always use up my bandwidth within the first couple of days).

The last couple of times that this has happened, they normally fix it, wither by giving me an extra gig, or by changing the password (not sure how that works, but sometimes it does).

this time, the supervisor called me bakc promptly, but then said that he will need to speak to a techie... I find it a bit strange, but I will have to wait.

Also, one of the first line support said that this is something that happens mainly with people with old accounts... Anybody else heard anything about this?

On the bright side, at least they have moved on from "Oh, that's because you are capped", when you tell them the connection is not working.
