Ok here is a stupid question.

How do I know when I am capped, what will my IP range be? Reason why I ask is- according to most people on this forum if one is capped, international downloads and surfing will be impossible.

However this weekend I hit 7.5 Gig and things were still running at 54Kbytes/sec, then on Saturday afternoon I lost all connection. My modem could not establish any connection with my ADSL line, it was just dead. On Sunday I reported the fault with Telkom and they said they will let me know by Monday. So this morning I tried to connect again and my modem connected without any problems.

So preparing for the worst, I tried some international surfing and downloading. Strangely it seems I can still connect to my international links and can still do international file downloads, but it is certainly slower – but similar to what I had on dial-up.

So know I am worried that I might not be capped yet (unlikely since I am over 8 Gig now). I need to establish if I am capped or not, if I am then fine. If I am not and I am experiencing this slower speed, then obviously I have a line problem from this weekend.

What is the best way to find out if one is capped?

If you're capped your ip address should be in the range 165.165.1-30.xxx where 1 - 30 is in the range from 1 to 30. I'm not too sure what the upperbound of the address is but it will certainly be below 100- Hope this helps

Hi Quazzi,

My IP is 165.165.32.xxx.

So I might not be capped then? Is there anyway I can find out exactly how high that 3rd IP range go for capped accounts?

Thanks for the help.

If you are not an MWeb ADSL customer and the third octet is below 128 then welcome to the world of "capped".

Thanks for that info HiHat,

Well I certainly can not complain about my ADSL too much then. I downloaded 7 Gig at a steady rate of 54Kbytes and now on a capped line I am experiencing dial-up speed internationally. Hope this last [:)]

to find out how much ,and if ur capped go here:

http://userstats.adsl.saix.net/

and then fill out ur username and password...
this works for ALL ADSL accounts in SA

Lol! I've downloaded at least 10 gigs this month (definitely capped) but, according to the stats, I haven't even used my line. [:p]

Lol they things and equipemnt is so messed up lol they suck they cant even make they moeny properly and piss peaple off properly i thought it was they jobs to get they so called clients pissed of they cant even do that right *sigh*

K well I have a question...I've never been capped but that is only because I've never had a stable enough connection to see me through 3/4 of the month. (that is a different matter altogether so I'll forget about that one for now) My question is: do most of you feel that your international downloads are faster than say if you were still using 56k dial-up? In my opinion, although I've only been on ADSL since September now, most of my int. downloads (75-80%) of them are as slow as they were on 56k. This occurs from day one of the 'Telkom' month. I do realise that the download speed will be only as fast as the server-side can provide but I feel as though I'm missing something here because I'd shudder to think of how slow my international downlaods would be if I were to be 'capped'. Also, has Telkom upgraded their overall bandwidth since the introduction of ADSL? I'm sure since 1 ADSL user = at least 10 dial-up users in terms of bandwidth, they'd need to think about doing that fairly soonish if they haven't already.

well, i find that with my adsl im getting faster speeds than i would with 128k isdn connection for international. so im happy, and for national, HEAVEN :P

PLUR

My international downloads are definitely faster with ADSL than with a 56k modem. Yes, some servers are bitterly slow but that has nothing to do with ADSL. A good test would be to go to an International Tucows page and do a download test. Their speeds are generally good.

Please forget about any international downloads while you're capped - it just won't work.

RE: STAT LINKS:

To confirm, the 'http://userstats.adsl.saix.net' link is bloody useless and doesn't show anything for me for the period subsribed. '0' values for all fields.

On the other hand, since I've willingly and gleefully joined Telkom as my ISP, I can go to: 'http://adsl.telkomsa.net' which is better and works. I love looking at the bars - they are so nicely coloured. Really makes for a bright shiny day.

RE: Speeds after cap:

UPLOADS: I have just uploaded about 30 mb to a UK server after being capped, and was averaging 19.5k p/s through 'SmartFTP's' stats. Went nicely and I was most happy.

DOWNLOADS: I just hit 54k p/s after being capped, downloading off '123-reg' servers in the UK, where I have cheap hosting. Some sites crawl, but generally it's faster than a dial-up. Maybe I'm just lucky. The inverse of this is my MSN Messenger can't connect, and I've had to revert to email. My communication with clients? Don't ask. I also cannot stream audio through WinAmp 5.0 etc. Just doesn't work.

I've realised that NOT ONLY do you get pushed onto a low-priority network with lesser bandwidth given, but IT SEEMS there is much more extreme port shaping imposed for certain internet protocols. Can anyone confirm this?
