Important online system has an AI problem

You’re running late at the airport and need to urgently access your account, only to be greeted by one of those frustrating tests — “Select all images with traffic lights” or “Type the letters you see in this box”.

You squint, you guess, but somehow you’re wrong. You complete another test but still the site isn’t satisfied.

Captchas have always been a losing battle and I don't know how many times the letters were so distorted you couldn't do it in less than a few tries. The only thing that really works for security is rate limiting.

Haven't had to do one of these in a while now.

My worst these days too many times involves a shared VPN location, someone among the masses buggering around sets off alarm bells and along comes Captcha to waste all our time.

If they made the pics selected clearer then would be fine. Almost like they want a higher fail rate.

Mildly interesting and relatable article from Poegert.

I get extremely annoyed at the reCaptcha challenges that present me with a single image overlayed with a grid, and you have to choose all the boxes containing a specific object.

For example, select all boxes with the bus, scooter, truck, or whatever object.

Every single time, a little bit of the object (motorcycle handlebar and mirror, rear right hand corner of the car bumper, etc) is also in it's own block. Do I choose it or not?

Those usually fail until they present me with a grid with an image per box, like Select all pedestrian crossings, traffic lights, etc. I have much better luck with those.

That being said, this only happens when I'm using a VPN (WindScribe in my case)

Don't worry, at least we know the Tesla will only hit the handlebar of the cyclist, or the arm of the school child and not hit them head on.

AI will not benefit mankind in the long run, that is a guarantee. But as usual people are to blinkered to see that.
