Capture NX question

A friend just spent small fortune on a nikon setup and now finds out he has to spend an additional R3k for this software which we both think is a joke.
what would be the difference between this and lightroom? thanks

Software isn't free, you know

Capture NX is in the same league (and price range) as Lightroom, Apple's Aperture, Capture One, etc.
