Hi guys/Gals

To begin, a quick summary of my problem.

My wife and I both own cars (work about 40 odd k's apart) ,and it would be a major hassle to have just one car.
The problem being is myself and my wife were hi-jacked last month, and shortly before that , i was involved in a fender bender in my own car.

My insurance has said that they are wanting to write my car off as the damage amounts to 35k and the car is only worth 50k ( I called fiat and they offered a 30k trade in) , so to get 50k is fine with me.

So here is the problem - We will both have around R40 000 each to put down as a deposit for 2 little cheap cars, or 80k for a bigger, safer car (we have a little girl due in May) ,but that would be a major annoyance in the mornings.

Suggestions would be great as I have no clue what to do. My insurance is wanting to process the claim, but at the same time we need the car until i have a new one in my hands.

If i get my own little car then I am only willing to finance 40k maximum (so a 80k car) , or should i get a new car with a residual?

Thanks guys.

should i get a new car with a residual?

No. Residual is bad.

Buy yourself a tazz for 40K or so

Buy the wife a Hyundia Accent
You can finance the wife's car

The accent is kind of a family car and it should have some safety features such as airbags etc - you will need to check this though

That is a difficult one, but for your sanity I would suggest to get 2 small vehicles. Little things like sharing a car can create a lot of frustration in a relationship. And if one breaks down at least you have a backup.

Dude never go residual - never ever. If you have to go residual it means you can't afford the car.
R80K car you can still get a decent second hand Picanto or something in that class.

Maybe look for a Bike for yourself if you are into that and then get a better car for the wife

driving a lot means reliable cars even if they're small. go for the best you 2 small cars you can afford.

my dad always said that if you can afford a mini, drive a mini and if you can afford a rolls, drive a rolls. but they would both bring you from point a to b and back as they're both cars.

no residual!

The Accent's great especially as a family car.
I own the GL version and it's really fun to drive. The interior features very little cloth finish with most being textured plastic (the seats are cloth!) - thus a treat to clean.
The 1.6 engine is very nippy esp. in the 4k-6k RPM range.

Also the car feautures all the bells and whistles regarding safety - the 2012 model features disk brakes on all 4 wheels, ABS, EBD, Driver & passenger Airbags, ISOFIX for car seats etc.
Plus a 5-year warranty and 3-year service plan.

Floor price for me was R153k and yes, I bouth the car with a residual and 0% deposit  - monthly payments R2820.00 (you should get a slightly lower amount with a R40k dep. and 0% res.)

Other options:
- KIA Rio (hatch - PRO: lots of fun to drive | CON: lots of gadgets that could break)
- Hyundai i10 (PRO: small and economical | CON: small on the road)
- KIA Picanto 2012 (PRO: big car features | CON: big okes sukkel with space)
- Nissan Micra 2012 (PRO: new car | CON: small engine)

** Take the wife and show her some of the options available. Let her choose the car she wants to drive (ofcourse within the price range).

PS. You could even buy an SUV... :p

Also try to get Ford Fiesta 2005 - 2007 Model. ENgine is tough as a bullet. Most reliable car around and value of money.

Im guessing you dont use tracker....

Whether you do or don't use tracker, I'm pretty sure that no-one would want to be hijacked, even if it meant they got their car back. In fact, if my car gets stolen, I'd rather it never gets recovered and that I just get paid out.

So true, even more so if you have a kid on the way!

get yourself 2 e46 bmw 318i's. with low mileage you can get them for around 50k for the 2000-2001 models or if you lookin at a later model, the 2003-2004 goes for around 60-65k. very good cars, also extremely reliable, maintenance isn't bad at all if you buy from places like Autozone and there are tons of spares shops selling bmw parts. if you want fuel economy, go for the 330d, not the 320d though as they are problematic wrt the turbo's packing up. another option in that price range is the 2001-2003 c class merc, can also pick them up between 40-65k, depending on mileage and condition. or you could go for golf 4, polo, corsa. why not go on to the aucor website and see when their next auction is, you pick up real bargains there sometimes and it can be financed as well, my uncle bought a 2007 c200k 2 weeks ago at aucor for 130k which is dirt cheap and there's nothing wrong with it, guy defaulted on payments so it was repossessed. or check on gumtree, cars.co.za, olx, autotrader and see what cars you find in your price range that you might like

Getting two second hand Fiesta's come to mind

Decent, reliable, has aircon, cheap to maintain and is fairly safe

I drove a Fiesta today... bloody nice!! I am looking at a 2008 Toyota Yaris tm morning. R69 000 with 70 000 on the clock. I know it is a girly car, but it is the 1.3 5 door, so a pretty good deal.

+1 I just got a E36 318 1998 for R15,000 , Parts are dirt cheap.

320d though as they are problematic with the turbo's packing up.

As for this...i think this has two sides of the story, most people rev the crap out of diesels when they are cold (this is what ive seen in the workshop). Imagine a turbo spinning @ over 50,000RPM when its cold...its going to eventually break.
