I'm in Cape Town, I have money but I'm very aware of the law of diminishing returns.

What car is this in? Also proper installation of the speakers will also improve the sound. Mounting them on baffles made of MDF and applying a layer or 2 of sound deadening material to the inner door skin will also make a big difference.

Ditch the 6 x 9s. They will pull your soundstage towards the rear which is not what you want. Your soundstage should be ideally foward. Imagine the band playing on your dash. If the car is properly set up the sound would seem to be coming from somewhere over your bonnet. This is what vehicles competing in Sound Quality competitions strive for.

Emphasis mine... Now we are talking! This is what I'm after - the sound right now seems the be in a little box somewhere inside the dash. This is disappointing.

Thanks everyone for all the advice, please keep it coming if there is anything else that springs to mind.

As of right now, I'm going to funnel funds into an amp and forego the 6x9s.

How will splits that are typically tuned to not go lower than around 60hz give much bass?

Not sure where you can fit 6x9's in a Jeep to flesh out the bass but on hatchbacks they do sound pretty decent fitted on the parcel shelf, they can use the boot cavity as a sound enclosure of sorts . Not hi quality per say but it achieves the aim and sound very decent in the setups I've heard. Ideally a sub is the answer but that's not always a viable option.

Instantly halve your boot space?

Give them enough power and see what happens. I've gone the 6x9 route, thanks but no thanks. I wouldn't recommend to someone something I wouldn't use myself. 6x9's are not the answer. But hey, that's just my opinion.
 
Ok didn't know that, rather impressive specs, agree 2 sets of those with an amp should give plenty bass and no need for a sub.
