Howzit guys

I am not the kind of guy that you first hear and then see when I drive around the block, but I still have the standard stock sound system in my 1996 Corolla, which irritates me lately.

So I thought it's time to do some upgrading. I am looking at spending around R1000 - R1500. For this I'll need a new stereo which preferably has a 3.5mm port for my iPod. Then I'll need new speakers/sub/amp.

I really don't know how these things work. Can I just buy some speakers and a sub without an amp? Is the price range realistic for what I want? Are Sony, Pioneer, JVC the "standard" brands which one should consider?

Given the above questions, should I just pop in at my local car audio shop or are there any good online shops which sell these car sound systems?

Any advice would be appreciated ! ;)
Thanks guys!

I had some sound in my last car, R1000-R1500 is a little low including the radio, you will need:

Sub
Amp
Box
Wiring Kit
Hi-Low Converter
& Your new front loader

Try autostyle, speak to Naeem, he is on the forum as well so you can pm him, just search autostyle and you will find him. And for pricing to get an idea www.autostyle.co.za.

As for the brands I have always stuck with pioneer, all depends on how much you wanna spend and what you want out of it.

LOL! R1000-R1500. You can maybe get a head unit that matches your requirements. I doubt even that however.

Headunit wise I like JVC the most (I've just had better experiences feature wise with their HUs) but Pioneer has worked well for me also. Sony sucks balls (in everything car sound).

I think you should up your budget and maybe stick to just a decent head unit and some co-axle speakers. R5000 is more realistic for entry level sound. There are some places that'll offer specials like R3000, but it will definitely be brands like Star sound. Going that route, IMHO I'd rather take a decent brands co-axles over that with a decent head unit but hey, to each his own..

If your maximum budget is R1500 you need to go to china mall for sound. Good brands are quite expensive. I picked up some good second hand sound off junkmail at almost half the price of the brand new stuff. Do some homework before you make your decision to purchase.

I think you gotto up your budget a bit, but you can just get a nice front loader and 4 indoor speakers (not sure if they can fit in your cars doors?). Do you really want a 12" sub what not vibrating everything or just better quality sound?

I'm not that big into sound, when I was looking at sound I just wanted slightly more bass and clarity than my polo's stock speakers, and the quote was like R3k for JBL speakers, front n back with install and all the extra cabling an amps n what not that were needed for them to work with my stock HU. But I spend the cash on my PC.. hahaha

THanks guys :)

Yeah, I thought R1500 would not be enough. Hell, I can fork out R10k if I want to, but I don't want to spent a lot on this. All I'm looking for is good quality sound.
But thanks for all the advice. Think I'll up my budget to around R3k then and I'll search around to see what I can get. ;)
