Car battery problems

SABAT is crap ... dies within 6 months and the replacement didn't even make it to six months!

Varta / Exide / Raylite <---best batteries (Varta's is fitted in mercedes)
Also look for a 652. That's the biggest battery you can fit in the golf with the most power. (20ah more 200CCA more)
Price is about R860-R950. Got one for my city golf's earlier this year. (Think I actually bought a Willard. Was in a hurry and HAD to replace it.)

652 CAR BATTERY
Dimensions (mm) 277 x 175 x 175 Label Specs AH 65 CCA 530 RC 105
R1055 inc VAT each
http://www.tyretraders.co.za/index.php?page_name=list&type=battery&battery_type_id=1
628/9 CAR BATTERY
Dimensions (mm) 242 x 175 x 175 Label Specs AH 45 CCA 350 RC 65
R750 inc VAT each

AH = Amp hour (How much power the battery can store)
CCA = Cold Cranking Amps (How much power the batter can provide to start a cold car)

My Astra also came with a Willard that was a size smaller that the car could take. Currently I have the biggest possible size battery fitted, cause it was so cheap

Yeah, was planning to put a 674 battery into the golf, but will need to more the radiator about 2-3cm to make space for it. :(
652 is the perfect fit in a golf.

Lol Willard and Sabat are the same thing.

Regarding the 652, bigger is always better for your car but not your pocket. You will definitely not get a Varta 652 for 950! Or a Raylite for that matter, but you should get an Exide for around that.
You should get a Raylite 647 for that tho.

674 wouldn't fit cos its too high, besides being too big. Why would you need a truck battery in your car anyway :wtf:

Strangely enough, I think it will actually fit. was just a tad bit too long, and I wasn't feeling like moving the radiator cowling.
The 105Ah deep cycle battery was way too high.
Need a big battery for the planned sound system. Wanna try get to 155db  :D

The 668PP is 23mm smaller than the 674 and its a 90Ah which makes it 20Ah stronger than the 652. Thats probably going to be the strongest battery you will fit in without moving things.
Be prepared to pay tho, I'm actually not even sure of the price, since its not a very common battery.

Youre probably better off getting a couple of 652 AGM's tho because they are better at cycling than the others since they have glass matting in them, and then hooking them up with one of those ctek switchers - D250S DUAL. That way you should have 140Ah more than enough, and also remember that the AGM's have much higher cold cranking stats than their Calcium/Calcium partners. I would suggest you avoid hybrid batteries. They did the job in their time, but with their gassing its time to move on to better tech.

I would not recommend a truck battery for an application like that since most of them are still hybrid batteries and prone to gassing. Thats find under a truck, but not inside your golf :p

Make sure you get a sealed maintenance free battery, nothing like a battery getting poked because you forgot to top it up....

Update:

According to Autozone Spirex is made by SABAT (just their in-house brand name). They quoted R530 for a Spirex 628 and R620 for a 646 (can't remember if it's ex VAT, unfortunately).

According Battery Centre I need a 651 and they quoted me R1079 for an Exide (which is apparently all they have in stock). An Exide 628 will be R930, but is apparently too weak for my 1800 (really?).

Midas says a Willard 647 will be R810 (the 628 will be R708).

Confused yet?

Yeah, me too.

I think I'll go for one that's green, to match my car.

I put in a brand new Excide battery, lasted me a whole 3 weeks. Had to take it back and get it replaced. Hope this one lasts a bit longer.
