I have been interested in getting in to this market for a while. How does one approach a car manufacturer to do a shoot for them? Would love to get involved in this industry, but so far all my attempts have been pretty futile...

I went to a private store which keeps valuable cars. I did some test shoots for them and now I get called in for advertising.

All car manufacturers deal with Advertising Agencies that get paid to create and release all promotional work. Photos included.

Your best bet is to either freelance to the Ad Agency, or do as Randhir has done above and do work for a private Dealership.

Awesome. Thanks for the response Randhir. Will investigate the options around this and see what I can pull off. Dont mind shooting for free at all, as long as I get to produce some awesome images with some epic cars...

Make sure you know what your plans are before you start shooting.

Absolutely. Good car shoots aren't your typical go out and shoot excursions, where you hope that you get something worth keeping. A good shot requires planning, and having a fairly well defined idea of what the finished product should be, long before the shoot happens.

I already have a couple of awesome ideas for things to try, so now it is up to getting everything together and going with a complete proposal to find a car that the idea will work with...

I'd suggest the proper equipment, and an assistant. And a space to photograph the cars, and someone from the company to aid in moving the cars around.

Thanks for the feedback, but have an assignment due for college and trying to determine rates.

Have you got a 1991 COTY Monza to photograph or something?

Try saturnz, he'll know a guy. But only if it's historically significant.

Free. Just park like a chop in a shopping centre and your car photo is bound to end up on a thread here..number plate and all.

LOL - Thanks but that not exactly the type of car photography I have in mind

You gave a general brief which doesn't include much detail. I don't think you can expect a detailed answer.

wait wait, I am confused now... You have an assignment for college. Why do you need rates? Just go out and shoot.. or do you need someone to shoot a car for you for a college project?

Probably an exercise in generating a quote? Of course the photographer's rate wouldn't necessarily take into account lighting, venue/studio hire, insurance, etc.

I have to find out what rate car photographers charge per hour for a shoot. I know most car photographers work through agencies and I am unable to get their rates. Was just wondering if anyone had an idea. My only alternative is to try and calculate a rate from the rates supplied by PSSA, and try and find out what other costs would be involved ie: use of rig etc. It is for the business side of the photography course. Obviously if I had to get costs for wedding photography it would have been much simpler - there are enough photographers with their rates advertised on websites, unfortunately this is not the case with car photographers. The USA work on BUR which does not really apply in SA, so I was just wondering if anyone had a starting point for me to work with. Thanks

Sorry then - I shoot sports, not sports cars. :)
