i've noticed that car prices on all audis have gone up by about 2%, so i'm wondering if this is just an audi thing or if other manufacturers have followed suit?

well there goes the new car idea

If someone out there has time please do a comparision between what we pay for the same car in total vs US,UK,AUS or whatever country.
Vehicle price+finance cost so the total cost that we actually pay taking into account the rate of financing in both countries.

Would be interesting.

BMW dealers is also saying you need to buy before end of Feb due to price increase on 1st March

In the budget speech they announced something about a 2% "carbon tax" on new cars. Not sure if that comes in March?

I've kept off buying a new car for a while now and i'll continue to until prices start to make some kind of sense to a normal person

Just bought a nice 2nd hand Fiat Palio, still in good nick.

Had a good look at new vehicle prices, and they're all smoking something - which I also want.

Dont buy a new car then, rather a good 2nd hand or demo model. least u wont loose as much!

All car prices are going up.
And its absolute nonsense.
They increased the prices last year quite a bit becos of the Rand approaching R10/$.
Now we back to below R8/$, does the price decrease, nope, cos it will destabilise the 2nd hand market.
Same thing happened in 2000/2001. What they said was though that the prices wont increase for the next few years.

Maybe this gives some answers, although they are talking about 1 Sept 2010, and some scary figures in there.

Carbon dioxide vehicle emissions tax
The 2009 Budget announced an ad valorem CO2 emissions tax on new passenger motor vehicles. Based on subsequent consultations, it is recommended that the original tax proposal be converted into a flat rate CO2 emissions tax, effective from 1 September 2010. The main objective of this tax is to influence the composition of South Africa’s vehicle fleet to become more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. The emissions tax will initially apply to passenger cars, but will be extended to commercial vehicles once agreed CO2 standards for these vehicles are set. The proposed CO2 vehicle emissions tax will be implemented as a specific tax, instead of the previously proposed ad valorem tax. New passenger cars will be taxed based on their certified CO2 emissions at R75 per g/km for each g/km above 120 g/km. This emissions tax will be in addition to the current ad valorem luxury tax on new vehicles.

The highest tax rate is 4.1% on a vehicle with an CO2 emission of 450 g/km, and list price of R 606 000.00, which = R 24 750.00 tax.
