So I am planning to head on home to Durban during the Heritage Day long weekend. Want to take my brand new 2010 polo with - just so that the family and varsity buddies can have a look. :D

I am considering taking the long drive from Cape Town via PE with a couple of buddies, but I am also thinking it's not really worth it since it's just over a few days (might take two days leave from work) and the mileage issue scares me a bit. Another option is putting the car on the train, flying over and picking it up over there. This seems like the "cheaper" option in the short term.

Now, out of interest sake, what would you guys recommend? Taking the drive or using the train/freight company? Which one would save me money at the end of the day.

Why buy a car if you just going to put it on a train??? :wtf:

Drive the car down....

Or fly down, and point out cars that look like yours.

u gonna have to get a quote from the train/freight company

Well ya... but it is my first car. So it's pretty big for me.

Grats on that but I'd have to agree with...

go to VW Durban (or wherever there) and take them for a test drive in a Polo like yours :p

Make a road trip CD/flash drive of mp3s. Take it slow and easy- enjoy the drive. Driving is cheaper than other transport only if there are a few okes in the car with you to share petrol costs...

You really want to train it up and back just to show it off?

I would also take the car, be good to have it on the open road for a bit unless you always travel long distances. Plus you'll get to have some bonding time with your new baby :)

 Is this a question???

Add up the mileage on a road map and you will see that there is very little difference. Also, the trip is made 10 times better if you jump off the National road near East London, head up to Queenstown, and then take the R56 to Kokstad and then down to Port Shepstone and toll road to Durban. A brilliant run and it cuts out all the crapolla of the Transkei goats.

There are millions of Polos on the road so the chances are they would have seen so many that they would be bored with them by now. If you bought a car that is a little more individualistic and says something more about yourself except "I do what everyone else seems to do" then by all means you should show it off. But not a Polo - the whole point of a VW is to be understated, unnoticed and again unnoticed.

Rather fly up - its cheaper, safer and won't put that many kilos on the car - so less depreciation, not to mention no speed fines.

Clearly you're not looking for a logical answer (Leave it at home is most practical & cheapest), so I'd say just go with whatever you want to do.

Congrats on the new car... my first car would not have made that journey :p

How tedious you've become... nothing better to do I guess.

Care to clarify yourself? Last time I drove back from Johannesburg I paid close attention to never exceed the speed limit in towns yet a month later I got 3 fines for doing 140km/h on the N1 in the middle of nowhere. Plus a trip like that both ways can easily add 3000km on the odo which is about 5th the distance of service intervals - thinking of that way does put things into perspective.

Oh, and you may have noticed that I am not the first person to point out that Polos are very common. Unless the driver wants to make the journey for the pleasure of it there really is no reason to take the car.

I think its pretty obvious to most of us who the troll is by now.

Just check most, if not all, of the threads mentioning VW.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

I have decided not to make the trip this long weekend - there is just not enough time to rest and recoup before having to drive back, but I WILL take the car with when I go on leave at the end of the year. I'll put it on a train first to JHB or DBN and then drive back to Cape Town at the end of my leave. A fun road trip.

Some of you guys must be doing very well for yourselves so you don't see anything special about the new Polo, but in any case, as "common" as it is, my family and friends DO actually want to see it. Even though there is so many on the road. Maybe it's because it's mine so that makes it different? I dunno.

Thanks though! :)
