Say you have a brand new car from September and you sell in mid to end December. The buyer can then put up the temp plates for 21 days and register in January the next year. Then warranty would expire in December ~ registration certificate will show January

Yes - the car is built, shipped to the dealer where it stands until delivered to the customer. In some cases this all happens as three connected steps, however, in some cases, the time gap can be quite large - the last Legacy that we sold was built in Japan in November 2009, and delivered to its first owner in April 2012 - it has just been valued for a trade in on a WRX and it is valued as a 2012 model.

No, once the car is off the dealer's floor and registered ( temporary plate registers immediately with the licensing department ) it is then classified as whatever month that is, so a new car on temp plates in September will always be a September car.

So how does one go about buying a car in December and registering in January? I've heard that it does get done, I thought it would be via those temp plates (with my one car first get was when I did the papers and not when I got the temp plate)....
 
My car was manufactured in 2004, and registered in 2005. It's called a 2005 model, but it isn't really. Maintenance plan expired due to mileage long before age, and I never claimed anything under the warranty, and I have no idea of when that expired.

I think we're saying the same thing ?

Date of first registration determines the model of the car when traded/sold etc. So OP is a 2013
 
There was an Android app, that you could enter your car Vin and it gave you the year model. Will try and find it.
