I am totally new in this field, but would like to ask for some guidance.

We want to implement a card management system where people can purchase a card and add 'money' on the card. We have a cafeteria where they can then simply swipe the card when buying and money gets deducted.

I need to know the following:

What hardware will I require? What company do you recommend? (I need machines, card printer, etc.)
What software do I require? Is there software that already do the money management system? If so, where can I buy it?

Thanks

There are many open source apps available (freshmeat || github)

People lose cards and leave them at home requiring you to keep a book. You could consider a finger print reader instead.

If you go the card route, you'll need a card reader, printer, possibly scanner to scan items and a cash drawer. Esquire used to have a POS price list with all of this on.

Odyssey has this feature built in, as do other point of sale systems like Platinum. We've run Odyssey at the NMMU with no major issues for 2 years now and their pricing/support is reasonable.

Edit: Odyssey do hardware as well.

Cool, the fingerprint reader sounds interesting, but what software will be required to run such system where we can appoint credits or 'money' to an individual and once things are purchased and fingerprint scanned and verified, deduct the credits or money?

You can look here but from the sounds of things (no offense) you probably better off using a company like Odyssey or the like which would come with support.

Yep, agreed.

Will contact a few of these companies and see who can offer the best.

Thanks for the time and help.

Drawcard has exactly what you looking for.

Thanks ant_man

Had a look at their site, but not really what I want.

I actually want to print the cards myself. I want to reload cards with money myself as well. They can only use the card in our cafeteria. So, I will also need my own POS software that will manage all this - deduct money from the cards when they buy, keep track of stock, etc.
