I've got a little microsd card reader that plugs into the pc like a flashdisk. It works fine on my laptop, picks it up as F: . Windows Vista. 2 HDD, 1 CD so F: is the next available drive letter.

When I plug it into my desktop (Windows 7 x64) though it picks it up immediately, but does not assign a drive letter. It shows up under disk management, but alas, I cannot assign a drive letter there because I get "The operation failed to complete because the Disk Management console view is not up-to-date. Refresh the view by using the refresh task. If the problem persists close the Disk Management console, then restart Disk Management or restart the computer. ".

Now, I've tried rebooting, tried disabling other drives on the desktop to free up "F", tried diskpart, but the drive doesn't show there. etc. No effect. For now I have to plug it into the laptop and wireless transfer files from it.

Oh yeah, the sd card in the reader is an 8gb. Also, if I plug my 16GB flash into the desktop, it immediately assigns drive letter I: - the next available drive.

Advise please!

If you're plugging in your card reader into a front USB, try plugging it into a USB at the back, directly into your motherboard.

I've had this with all Windows Operating Systems with certain flash/external drives.

Sometime you get combinations of things (OS/USB/Drive) that just don't work as they should.

Sometimes it helps to delete the USB controllers in Windows Devices, when they reload they are often OK.
