Hi,

I'm currently working in testing with about 4yrs(all 6/12months contracts) experience(for 3 different companies) and I'm looking at moving over to a more technical field ie. Systems/Application Support,Security, DBA or even development(maybe). I've also worked as a part-time desktop support techie during my studies(info systems 3yr diploma at pta tech).
Truth is I'm bored and have been for the last couple of years. Didn't know or think much on the testing field when I was offered the job(after college) but now I've realized that this is not me and just looking at my options to move.
If we had to get soppy about it, I'd say I'm very passionate about that sort of role(Support/Admin etc). Generally very proficient in anything technologically oriented(varied knowledge in...MS products, Networking, Linux, Mac and Mobile environments).

Ok, so my question is to those already in those particular fields.
How do I go about this? Certs? Upgrade my tertiary qualification?
First certs that came to mind, MCSE/CCNA/OCA...and maybe Java.
Degree: upgrade to something along the lines ComScience(just not keen on the Math part)

I'm thinking for which ever job I go for, I should expect an entry level post and a salary cut.
For someone with my experience, which will be the best route to take, taking my testing experience into consideration(this includes experience in automation scripting and a bit of performance testing).
Basically to minimize the salary cut, which is my biggest worry.

Speaking to my bosses or contracting company doesn't seem to help. I guess they're thinking it's not their problem or to my contracting company that I'm worth more to them as a testing resource.

Help?:erm:

Thanks.

Since your current company doesn't seem to help, I would say apply for the same job you are doing now at a company that does all those things. Then when you are there, get involved with what you want.
That shouldn't be difficult, and you will still get paid the same, if not more that what you are getting.

where abouts are u based ?

PM me what u looking for and i could possibly assist you.

Thanks Heita,

Never thought of it in that way. An overlapping role...will look into into.
