Contact Brian Basson or Mike Gajjar at Cricket SA's offices in JoBurg. They can point you in the right direction!

Most of the cricket scorers I knew when I was a club-level umpire, were part-time. The NCU has "professional" scorers, but that was not their full-time job, although they got paid for it.

Anyway, I would recommend contacting your nearest Cricket Union, and they can put you onto the "scoring" people. I would imagine they would want you to start say at club-level, and then move up as you gain experience, as a club game with you, an umbrella and table, is a bit different to an international with multiple scorers for the board, tv, media and so forth.

You'd be surprised at how complex it really is nowadays.

The NCU scorers are brilliant and it was a pleasure playing premier league cricket in Pretoria.

Sorry but how would a brilliant scorer help making the game brilliant?

I would understand if you say the umpire makes the game brilliant, but how can a scorer which has got no effect on the game make is brilliant?

Maybe we are confusing scoring with commentating ;) ;)

Nope. As a player you learn to really appreciate the scorers. They can provide you with good information, not only on your own performance but also that off your opponents. Where do you think all the stats come from that you see flashed on your TV screen? Not from the commentators...

Ask any league cricketer what they hate most about the game.... umpiring and scoring for themselves when they don't get official umpires or scorers.

Ok I hear what you say but I suppose I won't fully understand it. Since being a rugby referee I know what great impact the referee has on the game - well it can't happen without a referee as opposed to cricket, so I suppose I don't fully understand the role of a cricket scorer - event though I did it at school.

OK - Liken it to a premier league rugby game and there is no physio or first aid or ball boy or linesmen or ref pitches up. What happens next?

If no ref, most probably no game, but they may nominate someone to act as referee - the law caters for this. No medics - no game at all (risk is too high), for the rest - carry on as usual :)

Cricket - if no umpires then make use of player/umpires. However, if there are no scorers how do you know what's going on???

i used to score a bit in primary school. but i saw some people who took it to some interesting heights even then.

they would, where possible, breakdown the stats. so for instance each bowler would have a colour and each run scored by a batsman would match the bowlers colour.

we are talking more than 20 years back so let's be glad i even remember that.

Contact an oval near you for details. This kind of job will be few and far between when it comes to openings...
