Samoa are changing from driving on the right to driving on the left within the next few weeks. A 3 day holiday has been declared and drinking has been banned for the changeover. Ghouls everywhere are celebrating. Watch this space!

Funeral homes everywhere in Samoa are rubbing their hands gleefully.

Now thats dumb, why they changing? Is there a benefit to driving on the left?

ROFL - I foresee some EPIC FAIL coming out of Samoa shortly.

Same thing happened in Belgium (I think it was there) or one of it's neighbours many years ago. Except the went from the left to the right. Change over went smooth for a week or so then people stopped concentrating.

They will be able to get cheaper left hand drives apparently.
Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi has said the move will allow the tens of thousands of expatriate Samoans living in New Zealand and Australia to send used cars - with steering wheels on the right side of vehicles - to their families back home.
It will also allow used cars to be imported from Japan, which also drives on the left.
Cars will become cheaper, and more people in rural areas will be able to obtain vehicles to help them develop their land, the government reasons.

Apparently, it has to do with poverty. If they drive on the right they must buy big, expensive American gas guzzlers. If they drive on the left they can buy lots of smaller, cheaper, more fuel efficient cars. Bus owners are moaning because they will have to cut a door in the other side of their busses.

Interesting Sweden did the switch the other way round in the 60's...all changed at midnight on a particular day, after all the roadsigns had been prepared and covered up.

Went off without a hitch...but we are talking SWEDEN here...and as most of them drive Ovlovs they are pretty safety fanatic to start off with!

Apparently they get most (all) of their cars second-hand from Aus... which uses RHD cars as it drives on the left too. So makes sense really.

They're changing because they're the only island in the region that drives on the right.

As it stands they need to import cars from the states at great expense, making them unreasonably priced (Hey like in SA). Converting to left hand drive will enable them to import cars more cheaply from Japan, Australia, New Zealand.

Perhaps a niche for SA? Export cars to Samoa?

Now who ever brought on these changes is one of the smartest people alive.

He combats poverty by doing one change which will affect 2 parts of his problem.

1. Over population (Less people more money)
2. Cheaper cars

So by doing this which will result in deaths and get the people cheaper cars :D

2 birds with 1 stone?

Sounds like a deal for a car dump was signed behind the scenes... Maybe we can convince them to store our nuclear waste while they still in this generous mood:D
