So I have been having endless performance problems on Vodacom's 3G network from my iPad. Max throughput topping out at 2.2Mbps. High Latency. Sporadic service. Time outs. HTTP resets. I called 155 to get some help and they told me the iPad is an unsupported device because a. Its not approved on their network yet, and b. There are no Microsims in service yet so its obvious that I chopped a normal SIM (which I did :) ).

I have been having similar problems on Vodacom from my iPhone, and tried explaining that, but alas, deaf ears.

So I decided to go buy a MTN sim, chop it, and see how it went. Much much better. 6Mbps average download, far snappier browsing, much lower ping.

My question therefor is, to other iPad 3G users : what have your experiences been like? Anyone else noticed the massive difference between Vodacom and MTN?

Maybe your area just has a poor tower, you might find that somewhere else the situation is reversed. Thankfully the iPad is unlocked.

What i have noticed is EDGE coverage on Vodacom is CRAP (in jhb anyways)... 3G isn't bad, got a lot better! but i have a funny feeling MTN has better coverage :/ but yeah as Synaesthesia said, try em both out for your area :)

Ok here is the thing... I have tried it in Jozi, Dbn and Cpt, same results... Oh well, suppose I will have to do some deeper technical tests. Thanks for the feedback.

With all of my 3G devices I've always found MTN to have better speeds and coverage than VC.
+100 to MTN IMO ;)

Tend to agree, unless you living in the centre of the city VC tends to suck! They been promising a new tower in my area now for going on 2 years after I complained that I can't even send an MMS due to bad GPrS never mind 3G.
